Help and support for Ultimate Edition 2.9

How to Update Ultimate Edition 2.9 kernel to 2.6.38.2 Candera ATI & Nvidia

Postby pclinuxguru » Wed Apr 06, 2011 5:27 pm

I finally have this working for ATI and Nvidia alike. WEEKS of testing and WEEKS of trial and error.

Facts are that 2.6.38.2 shows a 40% to 45% performance boost over 2.6.35 offerings.

Note : Some wireless controllers could encounter a problem with kernel update. Or it could fix problems, right now Broadcom STA has been the biggest problem child. Some have had luck using the broadcom packages for natty.

Please follow these steps to the letter. Note : this does NOT work in OZ unity. But has been tested to work in Ultimate Edition 2.6 2.7 2.8 2.9. Also tested as working in MOST Debian based Linux distro's.

Nvidia

Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install nvidia-current nvidia-current-modaliases nvidia-settings

Code: Select all
sudo nvidia-xconfig

ATI

Download http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/AMDCatalyst114bhotfix.aspx

right click the file and make sure you have read/write/execution permissions, double click and select run to install. use the auto install option.

Radeon 5000 HD or older GPU,s will receive a none supported hardware list, stress this NOT. I have already done the work and found the fix.

Download this file and extract
control.tar.gz
(3.03 KiB) Downloaded 252 times

Alt - f2 check run in terminal Type
Code: Select all
 sudo nautilus
hit enter

Navigate to etc/ati find control and delete, replace with this control file from Cat 11.3.

Now restart and carry on to step 2

2. Download kernelcheck
kernelcheck_1.2.5+bzr20100416-1mlrepo1_all.deb
(77.17 KiB) Downloaded 277 times

Screenshot-1.png

3. once install, alt f2 type
Code: Select all
sudo kernelcheck
check the run in terminal box and hit enter. Enter your sudo password to continue.

4 check for latest kernels, then check for kernelcheck updates

5. now run the auto install to install 2.6.38.2 Candera (latest stable kernel) as of 4-6-2011

6. make sure the power option to go to sleep or turn off screen etc are all OFF. Failure to do this will result in failed install.

7. allow to FULLY finish, check the window and make sure FGLRX was listed as OK.

if all is good restart and try out 2.6.38.2

Should you loose boot splash screen, once again. Stress it not, I have also done the work and found the fix.

open up synaptic package manager and remove ALL grub items. Now install these grub items fresh.

top 3 you see shown in green boxes in this pic

Now restart, then follow the steps listed here.

Ok that is fixed.

There ya have it 2.6.38.2 Candera working on Nvidia and ATI. Also tested as working on ATI 6970 HD and lower. Nvidia 580 GTX and lower

Guru - Thank you for a very easy to follow guide. My update went flawlessly, with none of the "add-on" fixes required. A question though regarding the kernel files sitting in usr/src. I was alarmed during the install when a warning box came up to tell me I only had 750mb of space left in my 20gb root drive. As you'll see from the screenshot, I've increased this to 1.9gb by deleting the 2.6.35 kernel files, however the new kernel files are taking up 6.1gb! Trawling the net, it looks as though I can safely delete these through RPM to reclaim the space, but I'm understandably nervous, so would appreciate your advice on which of the files in the screenshot can go.

Oh, and then a bit of partition resizing - it looks as though I was a bit mean in allocating only 20gb to root. With a further 25gb /home partition, and the ability to take up to 50gb from my Windows partition, what would you advise size-wise please for a bit of future-proofing (big-number items like photos, films and music live on my Windows partition)?

I always remove all old kernels using synaptic and updating grub.

But I had not removed the candera files, never bothered.

No idea what it will do in truth, other then lacking the ability to ever reinstall.

TheeMann had a script for removing all but the newest kernals, but I am not sure how well it would work as it was designed for older kernals
