DVD reading speed slow (solved)

Help and support for Ultimate Edition 2.9

DVD reading speed slow (solved)

Postby zoeybird » Fri Mar 25, 2011 8:40 pm

Hey everyone,

First off, kudo's to everyone involved in making Ultimate Edition, Ultimate Edition is awesome.

I just updated from Ultimate Edition 2.8 to Ultimate Edition 2.9 and was making "LEGAL <owning the DVD's> copies" of our DVD collection for extended work trip using handbrake H264.

After updating, I noticed my DVD isn't reading as quickly as before and it takes over an hour to make a copy, before was approx 30 mins.

I've done some searching around and verified DMA = on but, can't see why its slower now than before.

Troubleshooting included:
Optimizing defaults in BIOS
Used another SATA DVD drive
Reinstalled Handbrake
Reinstalled Ultimate Edition
Installed 10.10 maverick

Any help would be awesome or even a point in the right direction much appreciated. Thanks in advance
Steve

Ultimate Edition is awesome and <BREW> to all who put this together

PS not a new linux user but won't even pretend to know what i'm doing either :o

There is no upgrade option

Fresh install only.

So I don't quite get how you upgraded.

Or are you saying you fresh installed Ultimate Edition 2.9 over 2.8 ?

ok then lets point out the obvious.

CPU speed plays a big part here, use cpu frequency monitor and set CPU to full performance speed.

Next - update handbrake

Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:stebbins/handbrake-releases && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

If not already done

I HIGHLY recommend you update the Kernel set from 2.6.35 to 2.6.37.5

http://screenshotsfrlinux.freeforums.org/viewtopic.php?f=77&t=173

Use the custom install option, select older kernel and select 2.6.37.5 and remember to check the needed boxes for nvidia and ATI as needed.

Also install the patch.

Give me a sec and Ill update the tutorial for installing custom option.

I followed your suggestion but, somehow, I updated to the very latest kernel.

The very latest kernel also seems to have slow DVD reading speeds. I'm gonna redo and try the kernel you suggested first.

Question. When the kernels are built, would each new kernel have what the previous one had plus the new drivers for hardware that comes out. Sort of like a constant progressive work?

Thanks again

Did you crank cpu speed via cpu frequency scaling monitor ?

Did you update handbrake ?

why didn't you use the custom install option for kernelcheck ?

beyond that, don't see a DVD read speed adjust anywhere just yet, but looking into it.

also on a hardware end, Ram and cpu speeds play a big part here.

make sure that all bios settings are set correctly.

ripping off DVD is DVD coding and takes a pounding on hardware.

That said, quality and various video settings in handbreake take longer then others.
