bluetooth adapters

I'm trying to connect a bluetooth keyboard and mouse to my desk top IBM 3.2GHz computer with Ultimate Edition 2.6...It tells me that there is no bluetooth adapters plugged in...what do I need to do to connect these devices...I install the bluetooth package that i found in synatic package manager...however it did not change anything...Thanks to one and all.

Might be worth mentioning that in the instructions they use kate for the editor just substitute with gedit when following the instructions since kate is in KDE and 2.6 is Gnome.
