pidgin won't connect to yahoo.

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 2.3

pidgin won't connect to yahoo.

Postby eldonkr » Mon Mar 08, 2010 12:30 am

Every time that I try to use pidgin to connect to my yahoo accounts it tells me that it couldn't establish a connection to the server and that the connection has timed out. My usernames and passwords are typed in correctly, none of the solutions Google offers are helping. What should I do?

eldonkr,
I also use Pidgin. You might want to check the config by clicking on Accounts>Manage Accounts and then click on your account for Yahoo and click on Modify... and then click on Protocol and insure that you have the correct "service" selected. Take a look at the following ScreenShots for some assistance...

Screenshot-1.png
Open Pidgin and select Accounts to check or modify your account config...

Screenshot-2.png
Open the "Protocol" pulldown menu to select or change provider such as MSN or YAHOO, etc...

Screenshot.png
Now select the correct provider/Protocol, and you messenger should work if your Username and PW combo are correct...

Let us know if this helped. If you need further assistance, just ask... ;)

I have the proper service selected. My username and password are typed in correctly, they just won't connect. My AIM accounts connect just fine. It seems to only be an issue with Yahoo.

Thanks, I'll try that the next time I'm on my laptop and let you know if that works for me.

Also, how can I get a dock like the one shown in the screen shots?

That last suggestion proved only to be a temporary fix.

eldonkr & JOHNNYG,
Yep, that's Cairo Dock or "GLX DOCK (Cairo-Dock with OpenGL)" as it appears in the Applications>Accessories menu. The Theme is NEON. I found that the Cairo Dock with OpenGL is better for me than the versio without OpenGL - that one places a box on my desktop in the upper left corner that does nothing & contains nothing as well as being a little quirky and jerky for me. :?

Screenshot.png
I like the Fire effect when the mouse cursor sweeps across the icons... pretty cool...

Hey, eldonkr, sorry my suggestion did not resolve your problem. I do not use Yahoo at present, but I will setup an account and see if I have any problems, and report the results back here. It may be a couple of days, however, due to workload at my shop. :roll:

Oh yeah, be sure to add the Repos from PPA for Cairo Dock as the original home site has not been functional since around the first part of this year. You can begin here: https://launchpad.net/cairo-dock or go to the Wiki here: http://www.glx-dock.org/ww_page.php?p=By%20distributions&lang=en .
Those links should get you started. ;)
Let me know if I can be of further assistance...

Thanks for the recommendation and for trying to help.

Yahoo is really the only messenger that I use so I really need this to work on Linux so any help you can offer would be awesome.

Hello eldonkr.

Here is solution for you to try. ;)

66.163.181.173 scs.msg.yahoo.com
put that in /etc/hosts file and good to go from here.. try doing a ping on scs.msg.yahoo.com and put that resulting ip in instead. for me cleared up ever since.

Then if this will not make the fix for you - There is one more option here.

wondering why Pidgin was having problems connecting to Yahoo’s Messenger service for the last two days or so. I eventually had to go to Pidgin’s IRC chat room to find a link to some relevant information.

Essentially Yahoo is upgrading the software on their servers which includes a new authentication method that Pidgin, and other non-Messenger clients, aren’t compatible with, yet.

The only workaround that seems functional is simply pointing the client to a pager server that hasn’t been upgraded yet. You can do that by clicking on Accounts > Manage Accounts > highlight Yahoo account > Modify > Advanced tab. You’ll see a entry for the pager server.

It should be set to scs.msg.yahoo.com which actually points to a number of different server addresses. I changed mine to cs101.msg.mud.yahoo.com which is currently working with Pidgin. Save the change and Pidgin should/might connect to Yahoo.

The following addresses appear to work:
* cs101.msg.mud.yahoo.com
* 66.163.181.172

These are the IP addresses to which scs.msg.yahoo.com maps. You can try one of them directly, but recent reports (on 6/19/2009) are that few, if any, are working. Note also that there is no guarantee that the server at an address that works now will not be upgraded next.

* 76.13.15.36
* 76.13.15.37
* 68.180.217.6
* 68.180.217.7
* 68.180.217.8
* 68.180.217.9
* 68.180.217.10
* 68.180.217.11
* 68.180.217.12
* 68.180.217.13
* 68.180.217.14
* 76.13.15.29
* 76.13.15.30
* 76.13.15.31
* 76.13.15.32
* 76.13.15.33
* 76.13.15.34
* 76.13.15.35

You can verify this list yourself by running one of the following commands:

Windows: nslookup scs.msg.yahoo.com

Linux/Unix/OS X: dig +short scs.msg.yahoo.com

To use one of the addresses above, you can either modify the setting in Pidgin (Accounts -> Manage Accounts -> Modify -> Advanced -> Pager Server) or you can modify the hosts file:

Windows: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Linux/Unix/OS X: /etc/hosts

Hope we are Done here with the issue ;)
