My usernames and passwords are typed in correctly, none of the solutions Google offers are helping. What should I do?
eldonkr wrote:Thanks, I'll try that the next time I'm on my laptop and let you know if that works for me.
Also, how can I get a dock like the one shown in the screen shots?
66.163.181.173 scs.msg.yahoo.com
put that in /etc/hosts file and good to go from here.. try doing a ping on scs.msg.yahoo.com and put that resulting ip in instead. for me cleared up ever since.
wondering why Pidgin was having problems connecting to Yahoo’s Messenger service for the last two days or so. I eventually had to go to Pidgin’s IRC chat room to find a link to some relevant information.
Essentially Yahoo is upgrading the software on their servers which includes a new authentication method that Pidgin, and other non-Messenger clients, aren’t compatible with, yet.
The only workaround that seems functional is simply pointing the client to a pager server that hasn’t been upgraded yet. You can do that by clicking on Accounts > Manage Accounts > highlight Yahoo account > Modify > Advanced tab. You’ll see a entry for the pager server.
It should be set to scs.msg.yahoo.com which actually points to a number of different server addresses. I changed mine to cs101.msg.mud.yahoo.com which is currently working with Pidgin. Save the change and Pidgin should/might connect to Yahoo.
These are the IP addresses to which scs.msg.yahoo.com maps. You can try one of them directly, but recent reports (on 6/19/2009) are that few, if any, are working. Note also that there is no guarantee that the server at an address that works now will not be upgraded next.

You can verify this list yourself by running one of the following commands:
Windows: nslookup scs.msg.yahoo.com
Linux/Unix/OS X: dig +short scs.msg.yahoo.com
To use one of the addresses above, you can either modify the setting in Pidgin (Accounts -> Manage Accounts -> Modify -> Advanced -> Pager Server) or you can modify the hosts file:
Windows: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Linux/Unix/OS X: /etc/hosts
