broken after update[not yet solved,please help me out]

hi friends!
I've installed Ultimate 2.3
everything was fine until I've installed the upgrades its been recommending me to,since i've installed the OS!
after the update,it requested for a restart,which i did!however,now, after booting, there are sorts of broken windows, colours spread on the screen,etc...and i can't do anything...I've tried with the recovery, but nothing worked...
i'm now from live cd,ubuntu....
can it be repaired?
is it that my computer does not meet the requirements of ultimate?

When you reboot choose the kernel third from the last.(count three down)
Does it log in correctly?

well,it doesn't work...the only difference is that now there is the background ubuntu 9.04....and still broken...
by the way,i had already try those things...the only booting way is through recovery...then,on a normal boot, it boots to give a broken window...
In fact, do you have any one of those "sudo" codes, which i can use to know what my computer is...for example, if it is a 32- bit or a 64 bit....etc'''

I don't know of any command.If you list your cpu type I can tell you if your capable of 64 bit.Also do you know which ati driver you were using before the update?Or did you just load it up(the os),and run it from the beginning?
If this is a graphics issue...which I'm sure it it.It could be a long drawn out method to fix it.Just giving you a heads up.

ATI Radeon 7000 32mb TV out
all these are written on the list they gave when i bought my PC

i also got a tv card which doesnt work on linux...Zoltrix TV tuner/fm card
and if its too difficult,then let it be...if it takes less than an hour,then lets try...

I don't know which driver it was,but it was running for fine before update...i just verified...I also installed ATI catalyst.....and another ATI program...this was before the restart..
is it a problem?
