Cannot get Win.MediaPlayer files embedded in Firefox to play

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 2.3

Cannot get Win.MediaPlayer files embedded in Firefox to play

Postby jcapuano1 » Wed Aug 26, 2009 9:47 am

I'm using UE2.3 and Firefox 3.5.2.

When I go to a web page with embedded music from a wma file the file won't play, and cannot find a suitable plugin.

Here's an example page, which plays fine in IE 8.0 and Firefox 3.5.2 using Windows.
http://www.drchristine.com/rccr/hangartalk/
The plug ins in use under windows are attached so I'm thinking I need Windows Media Player plugin but don't know how to add it under Ubuntu. Any help would be appreciated. Jim

When I type that in terminal I get access denied. Copy below:

jim@jim-desktop:~$ apt-get install mplayer mozilla-mplayer w32codecs
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?
jim@jim-desktop:~$

Is there a way around this? Also, is w32codecs for 64 bit, which I have?

Thanks, Blackwolf.

Okay, I tried that and get the following message in terminal:

jim@jim-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install mplayer mozilla-mplayer w32codecs
[sudo] password for jim:
Reading package lists... Done

mplayer is already the newest version.
mplayer set to manually installed.
mozilla-mplayer is already the newest version.
Package w32codecs is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

Hello jcapuano1.

you can install the w32codecs from Ultamatix.

and you can install the flash plug in with:

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

maybe you use Totem player and not Mplayer as your default player.

OR:

you can use the script that take care them all :

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get remove gnash gnash-common libflashsupport mozilla-plugin-gnash swfdec-mozilla && sudo apt-get install alsa-oss faac faad flashplugin-nonfree gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse ia32-libs icedtea6-plugin libmp3lame0 non-free-codecs openjdk-6-jre unrar

I installed w32codecs from Ultimatix. That did not work.

I already have the flashplugin-nonfree. I don't have a problem with flash, just windows media player files embedded in a web page.

Totem player is not a plugin as far as I know. If it is, I don't know how to set it as my default player. Anyway, I want W media player to be my default player if at all possible.

I tried the script in terminal and that also did not work.

Could you please not take this the wrong way, I know you mean well, but you are difficult to understand and your suggestions do not seem to work, so please let me just ask that you not try to help me any more. I appreciate the effort, thank you, but if you could grant me this one wish, please do not help me any more. I would rather have others help me and not you. Thank you for understanding.

I'm thinking you will take this the wrong way and continue to try and help me anyway and disregard my request but if you could be so kind as to NOT help me, it would be very appreciated, more than you will ever know. Thank you again.

There is no problem from my side=not to help you any more jcapuano1 .
but anyway I will give you the solution to your problem!
This is my job-not personal issue here O.K.
and from one that write the BOOK of multimedia on the U.E,
just follow the steps that I post to you and get your problem solve.
and I respect your request and I will not help you no more.

open synaptic and use the following steps please.

stnaptic=>search=>Mplayer.

stnaptic=>search=>Totem.

stnaptic=>search=>Avifiles.

open FireFox-Get Add-ons=>Brows All add-ons

mediaplayerconnectivity

after you will install mediaplayerconnectivity, you will have Wizard with Next-Next-Next.
and you will see that your Mplayer is the default player on your machine.

Hi Cell,

I too have no problem playing the video on the page. It's the embedded music that plays when you first visit the page shown in the upper left corner that's not playing.Is that playing for you? Thanks.
