I worked 34 years for Eastman Kodak. For 15 years I worked on Color Photographic Paper Development and spent quite a bit of time with Lined Paper, Colored Pencils, and a Calculator. In the middle eighties, we had to learn to use an IBM Mainframe. They got so slow as everyone got an account. When the first PC's arrived, I was so excited about finding a way to use them to take the work I was doing on the mainframe, Offline.

I started with Dos 2.0 and slowly moved up to Dos 7, OS2, Windows, and also a Mac. In my division, I was spending so much time learning to use a PC and helping others, that my time was split 50/50 between IT and Development work.

In 1991, a full time position was created for me, as the only IT guy in our division. I worked in IT for the rest of my career and retired in 2003.

Very few of the people I supported used Unix machines so I had very little experience with it. Because I was hooked on GUI, I am Command Line Challenged. I am trying to make up for that now, but it is slow going.

Someone with your experience should be able to learn the commands no problem given enough time. To be completely honest I really prefer GUI as well myself, but the command line is a very nice thing to know. It gives you functionality and speed that GUI simply cannot match, YET. I truly think you'll get it in time and it's always a good thing to expand your horizons. Nice resume by the way. I wish you luck and I hope you one day look at command line code and understand it...Personally for me its like looking at greek for the most part except for some of the most common commands. However, I really enjoy working with the command line, but be weary of what people outside of this site might suggest you to try.
I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Thanks!! One of the things I have learned from this site is When in Doubt, Throw it Out, and start over. A good example was after crashing X numerous times trying to get the 185 drivers to load, I reinstalled UE2.2 and the driver installed with no problem.

I can type in the Command Line stuff and execute it. It is now a matter of understanding what the commands mean and when to use what.

Just wanted to say I upgraded from the 32 bit version to the 64 bit version. I haven't noticed any major changes other than a slight increase in speed on certain tasks, like startup. I did notice during the installation of many of the apps that are not included that some dependencies (namely python related) aren't in the 64 bit version that are in the 32 bit version. Regardless of that I am happy with Ultimate Edition 2.3. I've had Ultimate Edition from 2.0 - 2.3 (which isn't saying much), but I've only been using Ubuntu for about a year or so and prior to that had never used a linux distro of any kind. Back to what I was going to say, so far 2.3 is my favorite release to date not that I use KDE but I still upgrade for any changes you may make to the kernel and for the themes. Anyways, thanks again for an incredible distro.

I backed up some files and installed 2.3 64bit, fresh. I installed the Nvidia 64bit 185 drivers and Flash 10 64bit using the code that I acquired from the 2.2 forum. I installed MythTV and Mythplugins, from Synaptic. I have no problems with the Overscan since I learned how to get into the Service Menu on my Sony HDTV.

So all is well, so far. I still need to install Google Earth 4.3. It is not in any of the Repositories that come with 2.3 64bit.

The only thing I can't figure out is how to display MythTV in a Full Screen. I chose settings in the Frontend to use separate resolutions for Gui and TV and set them both to 1920x1080. I had the same problem in 2.2.

As for Google Earth, you can get the latest through UbuntuTweak :D & for Myth try disabling desktop effects ;)

You can also get it through Ultamatix under the Office tab.

Even I am going to try that. Currently I am downloading 64-bit ISO. Lets hope for the best.Technically it should be better to have 64-bit OS if processor supports it as u can run all the 32-bit apps and they should run fine. Only problem are the drivers as they are compiled for 32-bit.But Linux/Unix should be an exception as most of the drivers are open source and compiled on 64-bit. Plz correct my knowledge wherever and whenever wrong.

Happy to share what I know.... :)

I only display my PC output on my 50" HDTV. I do not use an additional monitor. When I launch MythTV, the application window fills the display, but the Live TV only displays in 4:3 format, not 16x9. I could not find a setting in MythTV that would let me change it to Wide Screen (16:9).

You have to use a wide theme.....different themes for different displays.

Thats why I suggested getting mythbuntu control centre.....
