I think that thread is just about getting the actual card to work at all. I think I need to somehow download and install the proprietary drivers to get it to work 100%. The card is working at all, otherwise I wouldn't be able to see anything on the screen...

My other option would be to swap my current graphics card with this:
GF4 MX440 AGP8X 64mb DDR TV.
I might be able to find drivers for this more easily.
But I'm assuming my current graphics card is better, but I'm not sure, I don't know much about graphics cards. Which is better?

Edd,

let's work on that with another way o.k.
open ubuntu tweak, then go to Third-party-Source=>unlock down right+password.
then add the ubuntu tweak source like in the screen shot,
then add ubuntu-x.
Then Refresh.
After it will be done, close the ubuntu tweak and open terminal.

sudo apt-get update

then:

sudo apt-get upgrade.

in the process you will be ask if you want to upgrade= y and Enter.
after the process end restart your machine.

when you will be back to your Desktop, open synaptic-Reload-mark all upgrade-Apply.

Edmundajw very good.

now about the other video card well don't know what to tell you on it.
but let's try to go with the process.
any change there with the card under the hardware?
if not you will have to download the driver for your card with the catalyst,
(you can install it from add/remove)-just change there to - All available Applications.
were the show option is .

Ok thanks, I'll try that now.

By the way, I just tried using a program called ENVYng, and installed the ATI drivers. When the computer restarted it wouldn't start the X server. I tried the ENVYng un-install option but that didn't work. So I tried copying my backup (I made a backup before just in case) xorg.conf into /etc/X11 to replace what was there, but that didn't work either. So in the end I ran
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
and that sorted it out. I thought I'd ruined my system for a second there.

Anyway, I'll try what you just said now.
No, there's no change in the hardware drivers window.

Ok, I installed the catalyst program but when I start it it says:

'
Initialization error:

There was a problem initializing catalyst control center Linux edition. It could be caused by the following.

No ATI graphics driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning properly.
Please install the ATI driver appropriate to your ATI hardware, or configure using aticonfig.'

So I run aticonfig in a terminal and it says:

'aticonfig: No supported adapters detected'
