You need to go into System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager -> Settings -> Preferences -> Network and configure proxy for your machine.

try to edit /etc/apt/apt.conf (If there is no file available make new file)
Add the following lines to the file

Code: Select all
Acquire::http::Proxy "http://user:[email protected]:port/";
Acquire::ftp::Proxy "http://user:[email protected]:port/";

In order to get root privilege so that you can edit the file, you need to open a "Terminal" an type :
Code: Select all
sudo nautilus
This will launch a window that you will use to navigate to the file you want to edit!!

Or you could take the lazy approach and simply right click on the file, choose scripts, then gedit root. This is the quick n easy approach where you don't really learn anything. With DarkChilds approach, you actually learn something (sudo command) ;)

Cheers.
