Nvidia Control Panel SOLVED

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 2.2

At 1440x900, the entire Desktop fits in the Display area, however, the Display area is much smaller that the Frame of the HDTV screen, but there is no Overscan. I have 3" of black on either side of the Display area and over 1" Top and Bottom of Black. Increasing the resolution still forces edges of the Desktop outside the display area. Using the TV remote to change the Wide Mode setting from Full, to something else, does nothing to affect the Overscan at the higher resolutions.

1440x900 is the highest resolution where the entiire Desktop is visable. Right now, it is the only option for me until we can get the xorg configured properly.

There is an option, within Nvidia-Settings, to Acquire an EDID. I do not know if there is an EDID floating around somewhere, for my HDTV, and whether or not it would even help.

So far, the Nvidia drivers I have used, have to Drag Bars like the Windows version does, to Resize the Display.

The problem is nvidia does not implicate those same settings in the windows version with linux....So you kinda have to forget about the windows nvidia settings when your in linux.Have you filed a bug report with nvidia? They won't fix it if no one complains...same thing with linux.

[quote="buschbarber"]Here are the final snapshots of the Nvidia-Settings. As I said before, if I go up to 1600, I start to lose part of the bottom of the Desktop and if I go to full 1900x1080, I lose an inch on all four sides due to Overscan.]

buschbarber

Have u tried setting it at 1900x1080 and using auto adjustment on tv control menus it would cure your troubles.

jslick - I have tried all the controls that are built into the TV settings for my HDTV. If you can picture the Frame of the 50" HDTV display. It measures 43"x24". At 1440x900 res, the Ultimate Edition Desktop is displayed in a box that measures 34"x21". At 1600x1024 res, the box expands to 41x25 and it is off center, down slightly, so I lose part of the bottom of the Desktop. At 1900x1080, the box is 47x28. If I change the Wide Mode setting, on the HDTV, from Full to Normal, the box shrinks to 34x21, but the the Ultimate Edition Desktop is still cut off on all 4 sides. I have not found any of the TV settings that help at all.

Before you installed the driver did the desktop fit and once you installed the driver does the text look like crap and you can't get the screen to fit? If so you have to connect the LCD TV to a computer with Windows

run Phoenix EDID designer, run the registry option under tools and find your display (extracts it out of the registry). If you don't see it you have to go to regedit hklm system currentcontrolset enum display and delete all the displays and reboot. It will show up after you reboot. Now run Phoenix again, run tools, extract select your LCD and click on Extract EDID, click on file, take the check out of read only, on the General tab look at EDID Extensions and change it to 0. Export it to your desktop (.raw) format. Copy it to a usb key and place it in your linux home folder and rename it to .edid instead of raw. Open up a term and sudo cp myedid.edid /etc/X11 assuming you named the file myedid.

then sudo nvidia-settings

click on resolution and save to xorg and click on preview, this will let you add to the config file.

go down to device and after the name of the device add:

Option "CustomEDID" "DFP-1:/etc/X11/myedid.edid"
EndSection

Reboot and you should be good to go.

If you boot and can't get back into x

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

In Nvidia's efforts to hold your hand they slip sometime and you fall with them 8-)

I have not run Phoenix EDID Designer, in Windows 7. I can try and find it and install it. I assume it is supposed to work in Windows 7 64bit?

I read the Overscan.doc and I was able to use the same button sequence, on my Sony HDTV remote, to bring up the Service Menu. I was able to navigate through the list and found that 070 seemed to be the correct menu choice, not 086. I set the HOverscan and VOverscan to zero. I went into Nvidia-Settings and set the resolution back to 1900x1080. The Ultimate Edition Desktop now fits within the HDTV display frame with just a hair cut off of the bottom and right side. The HOverscan parameter only accepts positive numbers, so I could not set it to minus values. Perhaps there is a way to further Tweak the display size, but it is usable the way it is.

I checked out my HD Cable and the changes to the HDTV did not seem to affect TV viewing.

Well this is good news....lol.From all my research projection tv's are always going to have overscan...its the nature of the beast. From what I read you might be able to play with the pixel settings in the xorg.,but it will probably lead to a little bit of tearing which is not desirable to some.Hopefully the next round of drivers will do better. ;)

So......from what you stated above we are done here right?Let me know either way.....

I really appreciate the effort and advice that everyone contributed. Unless I discover some undesirable effects resulting from the changes I made to the HDTV, I would say we are good to go. I can live with this solution and hope that future Nvidia drivers provide more controls.

It is so convenient for me to just sit on my couch and switch between the PC and the TV without having to go over to a monitor.

I will post some questions regarding MythTV, in another thread.

I hope some others, interested in using an HDTV as a PC display, will benefit from this discussion.

Thanks!!
