kernel upgrade issue <<<RESOLVED>>>>

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 2.2

Re: kernel upgrade issue

Just let it install the .28 kernel.You can always pick which kernel you want to boot in.

Oy ya....Ive done what your doing also.....synaptics wont pick up on the .30 kernel on my machine,but I can boot into it just fine.Which driver do you use?I thought I read that the hdmi thing was fixed.From my personal use the regular ati driver out performs the radeonhd driver.

some more info...

The differences between radeon and radeonhd with r5xx-r7xx:

* radeon supports tear-free video playback
* radeon supports TV-out (experimental)
* radeonhd supports HDMI audio

from here
http://www.x.org/wiki/radeon

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonHD

Like I said tho I get better performance from the ati driver,but in your case only the radeonhd driver says it supports sound over hdmi.

First...Your card will only run on the open source drivers in linux.So don't install the propitiatory driver from ubuntu,or ati's web site.It will just create havok.Which you found out ....

Second....since you already installed the driver(propitiatory) its a real pain in the butt to get every bit of your system.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooti ... deonDriver

If you already installed the .30 kernel it won't get patched unless you added some testing repo's.So unless you did...you should be safe.On my personal system I just let the updates flow through,and I haven't had any ill effects....yet.Like you said tho.If your worried you can just close the back ports and block any kernel from coming in.

No if you install the .28 it should not hurt you.I have 5 kernel on my system with no ill effect.When you boot just pick the kernel you want...also it should automatically pick the highest kernel install unless directed other wise.

edit:I should add also that I do this for testing.If you do this on your main system nothing is guaranteed.So back up if you do any kind of work on it. ;)

but wouldnt i want the . 30 to patch?? should i install the test repo's?

For testing...yes.But as far as I know the .30 kernel is the last "stable" kernel.The kernels above(.30.1) are still being tested.

Of course I did all this driver/kernel mashing at 1:oo in the morning so I might be a bit off basis here. ;)

As a side note.... you can just change your xorg.config file so it uses the ati(not the radeonhd) driver.you don't have to uninstall the hd driver at all.Just omit all you put in with the hd driver and you should be cool.
