Help & support for Ultimate Edition 2.1

Now I have to re-install after I set up most of my software already :( And I see the updates alone are over 200mb. I will try it when I get some bandwidth after the 1st and after I made an image of my current system. And won't the hardware driver update just install the same drivers anyway ? Why would it install a different one than the current one if available now in the hardware drivers update ?

I checked on Nvidia's site , but I don't know if it's the same driver. On site it says driver 180.51 and in the Ultimate Notification and Envy it says 177. So I don't know if the Nvidia's site drivers are the same.

If you do a fresh install, I would ignore the updates till you get the driver issue worked out... nVidia will always have the newer drivers listed as they get them worked up...180.xx is just newer than 177.xx...and I'll pass on my own experience...in 2.0, I used the 173. driver for my 7600GT, then like you in 2.1 I had problems with getting 177 to work...so I went back to 173, because I knew it would work

This may help;

It's a howto to change into runlevel 3

Also, if you read the comments following the article, people having similar issues have posted alternative solutions.

Cheers.

I may be way off base here, but I think this is getting way over-complicated for what you're trying to do...I don't think it is necessary for you to change to a different "run level" just to get your driver installed..That's why I suggested a fresh install...to purge all the failed attempts you've tried so far...then try installing the nVidia drivers from a terminal...you know, APPLICATIONS>ACCESSORIES>TERMINAL...there isn't much that you can't do from the terminal that you need to do ( as ROOT # ) But first read through the "NEWBIE'S CORNER" ITEM# 3 and ITEM#6 will give you much more insight
Edit: Just to point out another option, if you feel you know what you're doing, is to hit "ESC" during boot, then choose "RECOVERY MODE" then choose "ROOT" tab to select "OK" then enter...this will put you in a ROOT Terminal"

You HAVE to be in runlevel 3 to install Nvidia's drivers with the sh command. It can't install while X is running.

Nothing in that newbie sections that helps. I have tried the tips there already and the envy commands there doesn't work. And I do have envy installed. I'm just gonna give up and leave it at this OS can't install Nvidia drivers. I'm not gonna format as I can't see how that is gonna make any difference as to the install I already did.

If you look at his sig...you'll notice he's running a 9800GT (nVidia) an advanced search of 9800GT will show just how many people are running this exact same card... I guess all I'm saying is that this card can be installed using Ultimate Edition, and as I don't know all of the things you've done since installing, it's hard to get you to where you want to be...BTW, I have no programming skills what-so-ever, don't know much of anything about Linux...but, I've been using this OS since version 1.4, with about 6 different nVidia cards, and an ATI thrown in for good luck, with no problems... if you stick with us here, I'm sure we can get you up and running, but the choice is yours
