Hmmm...

You DO NOT need more than 2 cores to run Gnome!

I don't even have more than 2 cores. I can run everything but high end games and graphics..but that's why god created the video game console. My interest in higher systems has more to do with compiling.

LXDE, XFCE, Gnome Classic 3.6 and below, I run these things on my Pi, which without getting too technical, I can assure you it is not equal to a dual core.

Ok, so..Gnome 3.8.

I have already mentioned that it is incompatible with the other Gnome bases..Mate, Cinnamon, Unity..so no need to fight myself, and no need to install those.

I started with Ubuntu-Gnome, because of that. Why start with problems I already know I am going to have?

I haven't gotten to Gnome-Panel(Classic/Fallback) yet, and I am not sure if I will install.

As an OS..Gnome 3..I really do not get why people like it. I may not care for Unity as a main OS..but..Unity started life as an add-on that people actually used..Gnome 3 doesn't have that advantage. It is not heavy, I think it runs around 250mb. A lot of little things don't seem to work, not enough to break the system,

Can you do me a favor BBOSAK?

Go into your OS

Open a terminal..

Type in

gnome-shell --version

press enter

and then type in

gnome-panel --version

press enter

Screenshot and Upload.

or I guess, copy and paste the readout..I don't really need a screen.

Actually betting you will be doing me a favor. See you are much more knowledgeable on Linux than I am!!! Looks as though the command gnome-panel --version either is out of date or has no reaction to this one! Here's output:
bob@bob-X55U:~$ gnome-shell --version
GNOME Shell 3.8.2
bob@bob-X55U:~$ gnome-panel --version

(gnome-panel:24412): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error: gtk.css:72:18: Not using units is deprecated. Assuming 'px'.

(gnome-panel:24412): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error: gtk.css:72:20: Not using units is deprecated. Assuming 'px'.
Unknown option --version
Did a little search and am suspecting that the current command is gnome-session --version. Have output from that also. Here it is:
bob@bob-X55U:~$ gnome-session --version

(gnome-session-check-accelerated:27199): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error: gtk.css:72:18: Not using units is deprecated. Assuming 'px'.

(gnome-session-check-accelerated:27199): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error: gtk.css:72:20: Not using units is deprecated. Assuming 'px'.

(gnome-session:27198): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error: gtk.css:72:18: Not using units is deprecated. Assuming 'px'.

(gnome-session:27198): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error: gtk.css:72:20: Not using units is deprecated. Assuming 'px'.
gnome-session 3.8.0
Will post a few pics if wanted just right now am on Konqueror and for some reason is not doing it this time, will be on Chrome next time for that. If you have any ideas am game! Only desktop that is beating my brains in!!!!

I think in order for you to be running Gnome Classic with Gnome 3.8 that command should have given you a readout.

I have to switch out to that OS and install, which the install command I believe for Gnome Classic will be that as well...sudo apt-get install gnome-panel..

The command can reflect any application that runs in your system and give you a current version, so for gnome-shell --version, we are asking what version of Gnome you have. For gnome-panel --version, we are asking what version of Gnome Classic you have.

Linux knowlege is an extremely large variable given all the rabbit holes, I am sure you have a higher accumulation of this than you think. Nothing is really set in stone either. I might be completely wrong about gnome-panel, I will find out in a little while when I am on that OS.

Looks like you have multiple gtk theme compatiblility issues. Most likely the one you are using is incompatible with the Gnome version you are trying to run...

Need about 10 aspirins on this one!!!!
bob@bob-X55U:~$ sudo apt-get install gnome-panel
[sudo] password for bob:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
gnome-panel is already the newest version.
bob@bob-X55U:~$ gnome-panel --version

(gnome-panel:4956): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error: gtk.css:72:18: Not using units is deprecated. Assuming 'px'.

Unknown option --version
If you are right Xan, boy did I get jipped and duped on this deal!!!! Hey am thinking that anyway as last time I did this(assembled 12.10) Gnome 3.6 worked fine, sure was missing some goodies, but I did retrieve them! This time is the version from HELL!!!! Honestly, even Gnome 3.0 when it came out ran better than this!!! So am really starting to believe is simply dust and might have to just uninstall and only use the other desktops! Right now as still have other OS on other Hitachi drive, can take my time and try to fix, if unsuccessful will just ditch the Gnome 3.8 desktop and stick with the others. If something comes up where I need my laptop with me would probably switch drives and use the Hitachi as both OS's on there are working correctly! Still comparing files in synaptic. On the P's so should not take too much longer!!! Hmm Chrome no go with uploading pics neither so must be part of what has gone terribly wrong with Gnome!

Well shucks..that will not check it..so idk. Using gnome-panel definitely installed.

My cairo dock shut off the panel, so had to take that out of start-up. I don't seem to have a window manager, I am not sure why it didn't just load up metacity, which I had to enable, maybe it's supposed to be compiz for fallback, and metacity for fallback no effects, since I do not have Compiz installed, ugh.

Edit

Yep..so fallback, no effects, loads metacity. Micro brought up a valid point, gtk+ themes might wreak havoc going back and forth from Gnome to Fallback as well.

So that..will basically give you a Gnome 3.8 desktop and Gnome Classic

Ubuntu-Gnome

Gnome 3 PPA upgrade

gnome-panel install

compiz install

Most themes will be somewhat incompatible, you can find specific 3.8 gtk+ on Gnome Look.

I don't know much about razor, I know that pacmanfm, for LXDE, is being brought there by its creator, but for now..I am going to start with XFCE since I already had to do compiz, and see what happens.

I need to install gimp first though..because this is driving me crazy not having it.

Wallpaper apps are a destructive force on the system for the most part, they aren't really supported too much. If you want multiple wallpapers..You can't really get more multiple wallpaper than KDE. You can run a slideshow on up to 12 different desktops.

I didn't have any troubles uploading a picture with Chromium...that might be something different.

XFCE really did not want to stop using xfwm4. Compiz works but won't incorporate. I changed the .config, the default config, I added it to startup...eventually the window manager stopped working after reboots, I took out the startup command and compiz worked finally at startup through config.

xfce4.png

I forgot to add..

When it comes to uploading, you are probably using gnome-screenshot , you have to change the picture name...so if it says something like this "Screen-Shot-2012-08-16-at-3.03.31-PM", you need to rename it to something more sensible like "screenshot" or "pantherpudding".

Installing XFCE added ubuntu(unity)(ubuntity?) to my session line up. Doesn't work.

Also, cairo-dock has been somewhat intrusive, it creates a useless fallback cairo start up in sessions, and takes over xfce dock. I unclicked it in startup, this has to be done for compiz to really work. I had to install it for Gnome 3, I never use docks really, but I just had to have something.
