Xan, hope you are reading all am writing about all this!!! I pretty much started out with exactly what you have right now. I removed the Ubuntu Desktop after upgrading the Gnome Desktop(Not really sure if this is Upgrade???) to Gnome 3.8. Now so far compiz only functions halfway. I did make the mistake of installing gbackgrounds which for some unknown reason totally dusted being able to see any (wallpaper)desktop background!!! Even after uninstalling the same effect exists! Next on Fallback there is now a strange entry called "Sundry" listed directly under sound and video. These are actually your main tools. Of course at first misunderstood the concept! Next on the upper taskbar, ApplicationsPlaces rammed together looking like junk! Not the normally separated deal known as Applications Places. Currently no way to separate the two as are now Siamese twins!!!! Next on the other side we have a major cluster ***k Classic menu indicator, battery level indicator(laptop) network manager, sound indicator, time indicator and power off! Not so neat as all jammed packed!!!! Those of us that like the time centered on the upper taskbar will now have to suffer with the entire cluster, not so sweet! Now on the desktop, those of us that enjoyed using our right click and using all our nice tools to create documents, launchers, etc are now denied! Does not happen unless you are inside a window!!! Am not liking that part!!! Next, we have Gnome Classic, which is on the order of current Gnome Classic(3.6 No Effects) Now here is the big exception! Alt + right click will not move or add a bloody thing to the panel!!! That is very lame! Next, now if you enjoy different theme styles then you get to watch it change up every time you log in to it!!! It comes in first on panel only displaying Applications in its original color scheme then it changes to the one you have applied. Of course this is the only area where you can actually change the taskbar theme. You have to first use Gnome tweak and turn all the extensions on, log out, back in then can use them. You also have the added vantage of Gnome original desktop if you move to the left corner with your mouse. Of course zero compiz effects!!! Sundry is there in the menu as is in Fallback. No more Administration or Preferences in system tools. Is replaced by scrolling to the depths of hell!!!! If this is advancement, maybe I will just stay back on 12.10!!! Actually, if I can not fix some things up with that desktop, will most likely resort to the other desktops I have in that Ubuntu!!! LXDE looks great works great with a few mods am sure can have my stoplights in the right hand corner and a few decent icons on the desktop!!! Actually takes much less time getting to it on the Laptop so will be the preferred desktop on it!!!! Gnome is just taking way too long to load on that 2core Laptop I have!!!! Anyway hope it helps you in your decision Xan as hoping to get you a heads up!!!! Always appreciate all the heads up everyone else gives me so will always give back!!!!!
