Random Shutdowns

Postby Leviathan » Thu Nov 13, 2008 10:52 pm

Ok, forgoing the pre-requisite suck-ups I have a particular problem with my laptop. Its a very powerful Sager and I hate to waste the power, but the damn thing reboots in the middle of downloads and other tasks which
one would assume to not be too intensive. I have read it could be an ACPI problem, so how does ACPI interact
with Linux anyway?. Windows I know, but Ultimate Edition Deuce has reaffirmed my Faith in the Opern source community
and Who ever made this distro needs to teach all the other so called "Linux Guru's" a thing or two about how
to put together a right proper OS. Anyway (I know I said no ass kissing, but man this $#!% rocks! and I'm an MS
fan-boi). I guess if this keeps pushing forward I wont have to spend any money in the future.

Thanks,
Patrick

Sounds to me like the software power management and the Bios are fighting each other.
If you change the bios settings, you will most likely end up with a real good space heater, so it's best to leave these settings alone and change the power management in the OS.

Only apply the settings that effect laptops.
go slowly, reboot often.

Have a look here: http://www.sagernotebook.com/category.php
and see if you can find the manual. If you have the manual for the motherboard great.
The bios setup is generally fairly straightforward. Just take your time and there is a default reset in case you screw things up. There is also a jumper pin on the motherboard to reset the bios. All you do to reset the bios is take the bios battery out and move the jumper pin over one place, wait a few seconds and move the pin back and put the battery back in.
