thanks for those links. I will try them this weekend. Is it possible to upgrade from Ultimate 1.8 to 1.9 when it is released without fully reinstalling it? I don't want to lose all that i have done and set-up, but i want to be able to continue to update as new versions of ultimate are released

thanks again,
alex

It gives me 3 options for backup: (Backup: /home, Backup:/, and Backup: Config files). Which should i select. I already did a backup of all 3 together but want to make sure that by doing this, i don't revert myself to ultimate 1.8.

Thanks for the help,
alex

edit: I want to have all installed programs reinstalled in 1.9 and all files, but am not sure of the correct option. and i do not know what the config files are or do.

ok. one more thing. I just remembered that my external hard drive is formated in fat32 and the OS X format. I cannot write to the OS X partition and the backup file is 15 GB, way to big for fat32. Is there a way to split up this .tar backup into multiple parts and then reassemble them after i install 1.9? I cannot reformat the Hard Drive because it has a lot of valuable images and files but i cannot update because i cannot transfer the .tar backup file over. Is there a way to do it all without deleting it off my laptop's hard drive (during the install use it as a backup)? I know that with winrar on windows you can disassemble a compressed file into multiple parts and then reassemble them later but have no idea if the same is possible with .tar in ubuntu.

Thanks,
Alex

Hi. I tried to install Miro onto Ultimate 1.9 with the command
Code: Select all
deb http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/pculture.org/miro/linux/repositories/ubuntu hardy/
. It worked before on Ultimate 1.8 but now says "bash: deb: command not found". I am not sure if this means that miro isn't compatible with the kde desktop environment, which i believe is what 1.9 use by default. Any solution or idea would be greatly helpful.

Thanks,
alex

You use that code to add the miro-repository to your repositories-list -- it's not a Terminal/Konsole command.

See these instructions.

Notice the first section deals with adding the repo to YOUR repositorie's list. Once you've done that you install Miro using Synaptic (also explained in the link).

/thought Miro came installed by default in Ultimate Edition...

Wow, thanks. I cannot believe i forgot that. Just somehow slipped my mind. I have been learning more and more in the terminal and somehow i forgot that that code does not go in the terminal but rather in the repositories

thank you for the help,
alex
