It might be a simple matter of VISTA not shutting down correctly. I had this happen to me the other day. I restarted VISTA and then immediately shut down again and it cured the problem. Although I didn't get that error you stated though ... its just showed all the files as locked on the VISTA partition.

EDIT: I forgot about the obvious one.... ntfs configuration tool set to read your drive?

So in short you have CD or DVD that you burned using Vista that your Ubuntu PC won't read, is that correct?
What types of files are these on the CD/DVD... Are they Microsoft Office files, or pictures or music or what?
I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am...

If it's not broken, you haven't tweaked it enough.

Have you canceled out any possible problems with the DVD drive itself??? You know, swap it out with another drive to confirm its not the drive?

If you set up a home network on your xp machine you can use pyneighborhood to access your Windows machine from Ubuntu. It is fairly easy to set up. Then just copy the contents of your disc to your xp machine(make sure you check share on the file you save them to) and access them from Ultimate and copy them to your Ubuntu machine. Once they are all there just delete them from your xp machine. There is not always an easy way, but there always IS A WAY. The up side is now you can access your xp machine from Ultimate anytime you want. This will come in handy in the future, trust me!!

welcome to the forums and all, mind if I ask what brand of laptop you are installing Ultimate on?

also what program are you using to burn your CD/DVDs with?

I burned a dvd with the Toshiba or windows in house burner proggie and it pretty much was useless. I also used it to burn some files over that ultimate did not recognise for some reason. Nero on the other hand is what I used to burn my first real good ISO file.and everything turned out great.

Oh BTW have you tried saving files to the usb?

that was just a start, maybe we can something resolved real soon?
