Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.7

Unable to browse drives and folders!

Postby TexasMike » Wed Mar 12, 2008 12:42 pm

Hello,
I just finished a fresh install of Ultimate Edition 1.7. All went well with no errors reported. After a couple of reboots, I wanted to copy some files from a different drive (one with my older Ultimate Edition 1.6 install), so... I did the following:
Places>Home Folder and nothing comes up. The file browser never actually opens; sometimes there is a flash/flicker of something, but no file browser! FYI: it does not matter which item I select from the Places menu, nothing opens (and there are NO drive icons on my desktop showing the 2 other HDs installed on this system, Ultimate Edition 1.6 and XP). I am not sure where to look (in the system logs) for info on this problem. Any advice/suggestions/pointers would be most appreciated....

Regards...
TexasMike

Hey there,

Maybe I'm mistaken but it sounds more like a fault in Nautilius rather than the actual OS.

Rather than using the window, if you click Applications>Accessories>Terminal

and simply type:
Code: Select all
ls

And do you see anything coming up?

Files and drives are viewable and accessible via terminal window.

Ok this indicates that either just Nautilius, or Gnome.

What I recommend now is to double click on the Upgrade Icon on the desktop, if you have problems with that, then look at the top Post in this forum.

Select Ultimate Edition when asked which version you wish to upgrade as I don't think Gaming edition is 100% yet. This will update all things possible. Then, try again.

If that fails please let me know.

No Upgrade icon on my desktop, nor any drive icons. So, I copied the script from the post you suggested, saved it to my home dir as Upgrade, chmod 755 Upgrade, then sudo ./Upgrade . This ran, apparently without errors.
On reboot, I have all my drive Icons, but still no Upgrade Icon. If I reboot and then double-click on any of the drives, they all disappear from the desktop and the file browser does not open. If I click on the Places menu, and any selection on the menu, the browser fails to open and the desktop icons disappear - they come back as soon as I reboot, but still no functional File/Drive Browser appears.
What now?

don't quote me on this but sounds like a permissions problem, I mount my extra drives at /media/

BigBitch Storage etc. I would open a terminal where you mount your drives, using my system as an example:

Code: Select all
cd /media/
sudo chmod 777 -R BigBitch/

I will let you know this is considered the improper way to go about it as it provides 100% access to that disk even from across the net, I hope your firewall is the bomb, please take the time to search for permission rights before doing so 777 is not the right number to be put there. I however have 100% faith in my router and do not care.
