I just updated the repo with the newest envy, hopefully 1 of the problems to be history w/o having to go out and download this or that ;) Still does not install the beta driver, but hopefully remedies the situation.

TheeMahn, what the real way to have the Nvidia control manager write the xorg.conf file after adjustment? Which file would you have to set permissions too? Just wondering. I have no problems doing it the way I do it, but it would be nice to know.

Hi himtuna,
I thought I was going crazy myself at first. After installing the nVidia using envy and rebooting, go to System Tools menu. You will notice there is a new menu item: nVidia. There is where you set your resolution and color depth etc....

You will have to manually edit the xorg.conf since the nVidia utility does not have the correct rights to do so.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

Here' your problem...

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "Generic Video Card"
Monitor "Generic Monitor"
Defaultdepth 24
EndSection

It should look something like this :

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "nVidia Corporation NV5M64 [RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro]"
Monitor "Visual Sensa"
Defaultdepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
EndSection

Hope this helps. You might also want to change the 'Generic' entries with the actual hardware names.

himtuna....

I am still in the process of fine tuning my xorg.conf for the new nVidia module. I'll post it up here for you to look at after I'm finished later tonight so you can fill in yours...

In fact, I think I'll start a new thread to deal with xorg.conf and the nVidia modules...

Looks like your always using "nvidia" driver from your xorg.conf file. What graphics card do you have installed? Did you use Envy to install? from terminal:
Code: Select all
envy -t
Try installing the nvidia drivers by doing a removal of old nvidia drivers first through envy. Then install using envy. I used to always install nvidia drivers from the nvidia site, but envy has been working really good for me lately.

This is incorrect. There is a pretty simple little work around that I use that has the Nvidia Control Manager still write the xorg.conf file. Adjust your settings per your likings, then click on "Save X to configuration file" and then click "preview" button in the window that pops up. Copy all text in the window, open your xorg.conf file, save as _backup, delete all the text in the _backup file you just saved and then paste in the new stuff you just coppied and save as xorg.conf (overwrite). DONE!
