Ultimate Edition comes with several media players pre-installed. in order to support all media file types, you will have to install them through the Automatix 2 utility also included with Ultimate Edition.

Due to retrictions on some media(flash divx wmv etc), Linux distros cannot directly offer full media support. You can however install all codecs reqired through Synaptic Package Manager(System Administration from your tab bar). Type in win32 from synaptic(these are your wmv, divx, mp3 codecs) type flash(non-free). You can install Totem(xine backend-it works better). Totem is a nice player(very simple-sraight forward)You have Totem Gstreamer pre-installed.Totem is just called Movie Player(Applications Sound & Video from your start tab-far left hand side) VLC Media Player will play most media out of the box. MPlayer is also included(It is the most advanced Linux media player). . If you want full DVD support you will need to install libdvdcss from here: http://ftp.debian-unofficial.org/debian ... libdvdcss/
There are plenty of choices for sound(your MP3's etc). Amarok is excellent. XMMS is a lot like WINAMP.
Have fun. pch

It is a lot easier to install the codecs through Automatix2. I do believe it is still included with Ultimate Edition 1.7. All you have to do is open it up and on the left hand pane click codecs and select all that is there and then apply. As far players are concerned, all is available right out of the box (although I do agree about xine-backend being better). Lets keep things simple shall we? One click for Automatix2 - one click for "codecs" in the left hand pane - I think about three clicks to select all the codec options- one click for apply.... done.

idk about with 1.7 as i never got this far b4 both muh boxs went poof. but in the past i remember i couldnt play certain files in certain players even after install w32codecs. would always say some crap about file unsupported or plugin not found. usually with mpg and wmv. to solve this i had to run the following command

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras libxine-extracodecs gstreamer0.10-plugins-base gstreamer0.10-plugins-good gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad

can anybody verify this is still needed. im jsut thinking maybe this is what the original poster needs to do.

Hey there!

If your new to Linux all this might seem a little confusing to you so maybe this helps,
All these guys were completely right I am just making it a little easier to follow.

After you have installed Ultimate Ubuntu, if you click on Applications in the top left, then System Tools, and Automatix...after you did this and typed your password, just click on yes and as long as you have an internet connection it will install the codecs you need
