Share your 2G/3G/4G wireless broadband connection with linux

Postby pam » Thu Aug 09, 2012 12:39 am

This setup will spare you from buying a 3G wireless router(assuming you have a spare/old laptop/computer lying around) to share your 3G connection and will allow by adapting you to share your 2G/3G connection using your old/present router.

Ideally a lightweight distro is the perfect choice for this kind of setup.
Lubuntu 12.04 beats all.

Requirements are as follows:
--A netbook, nettop or an old laptop or computer lying around, an intel atom nano-ATX system, etc....
--A wireless router with 4 10/100 ports and 1 wan port.
--An ethernet cable connecting the netbook etc... to the WAN port of your router.
--A copy of Lubuntu 12.04--(install by unetbootin with flash drive OR connect external DVD drive and install from there)
--A 3G dongle with internet access enabled... plugged into your netbook etc...
--OR connect your smartphone with 2G/3G internet access to your netbook etc...(all smarphones are plug and play under linux).
--A computer or laptop connected wirelessly or wired via ethernet port waiting for internet access to your router...

Now make sure your 3G dongle is compatible with LUBUNTU 12.04 or take a risk by purchasing one with ignorance and overconfidence that it WILL work under linux!.......Im using a Dlink DWM 156.

CONNECT AS FOLLOWING:

3G ENABLED NETBOOK(or you can use your smartphone or older gprs enabled cellphone) >> CAT5/CAT6 ETHERNET CABLE >> TO WAN PORT OF ROUTER >> ETHERNET PORT OF ROUTER >> CONNECTED WIRELESSLY/WIRED TO A COMPUTER AWAITING INTERNET ACCESS.

After you are setup with 3g internet access on your netbook etc ... proceed as following:

-Make sure your netbook ethernet port is connected to your router's WAN port
-Click on network-manager on your panel on the desktop.
-Click edit connections.
-Under "Wired" connection click edit ( your ethernet port).
-IPv4 settings----- click on "shared to other computers".
-save and exit.
reboot router and netbook.
-check internet access on another computer.

NOTE: If you get continuous " connected-disconnected " ERROR on your netbook do the following:
-open terminal
#sudo su
enter password
then type
# killall dnsmasq

The above command will solve the problem and will assure you get high speed internet access.

Now check your computer which is connected wirelessly/wired to your router...you should get an internet connection.

ALERT!:
IF you do NOT have any spare computers or netbooks lying around...this process can become expensive as buying a system or netbook for this purpose costs too much as compared to buying a wireless 3G/3.75G router.
You could buy a dirt-cheap 3G/3.75 G wireless router from TP-Link ... but make sure before your 3G wireless dongle is compatible with the 3G router you will plug into.
