Thanks, I'll try that. I just got 1.7 installed on this machine for my son, and somewhere along the install was notified that there were upgraded drivers, but I ignored this, because I wasn't sure of what onboard video the machine had, glad now I did, might have borked the install. I was going to stick in the ATI agp all-in-wonder, but was afraid of driver issues, so I think I'll leave well enough alone and buy an nvidia, should be able to get one cheap that's better than the intel onboard.

If it was me...
I'd disable the onboard video
slap in the Ati card
hit Esc at the first sign of grub
select Recovery Mode
once your at the prompt start envy
Code: Select all
envy -t

install the Ati drivers
be sure to read Which Ati driver do I use from Newbie's corner
This will tell you which order to try the drivers if Envy doesn't install it correctly the first time.
The cool thing about Envy is you can always uninstall the driver without screwing up your system,
either from inside Envy or the command line
Code: Select all
sudo envy --uninstall-all

Worst case scenario... you uninstall the Ati driver, Enable the onboard video, and pull out the Ati card.
Right back where you started from.

Seems like a lot of work considering I just packed it in a box, but you're right, I'll dig it out, if it's worth doing, it's worth doing right, will post back to let you know how your how-to on the ATI drivers went
