Probably a very stupid graphics card question

Postby garagestmarien » Fri Sep 02, 2011 7:44 am

Okay, this may sound really stupid, but I am trying to find out, what exactly does the graphics card do?
Now everyones stopped laughing, I ask because;
I know it has effect for: booting, playing videos, editing videos, 3D desktop etc.
But, as I understand, things like youtube work on flash and (I maybe wrong) has nothing to do with the graphic card.
So back to my question, which perhaps I should change to what part does the graphics card play in the operating system.

Things like, will programs open faster with a better graphics card.
Does it have anything to do with file transfers between discs.
Does the graphics card have anything to do with the internet (i.e. faster loading on pages, or more smooth scrolling of pages etc).
I am planning to update my card, but want to know what it does, so I can look at what one will be best for my setup.
I hope someone can shed some light on this.

John

Even for this rig, performance is good and all 3d works nice.

There are no stupid questions in this forum!
If you want to boot your computer faster and make it more responsive get more and faster ram. If you like to game or stream video get a more efficient cpu and video card. If you can afford it max out your motherboard's capabilities. If you find your motherboard is limited get a more flexible one. Have a look at the new Llano apu:
