Nec Multisync A500 Monitor, Screen Resolution Problem

Postby yizuman » Wed Jan 14, 2009 5:40 am

I am running a Nec Multisync A500 Monitor that works, but problem is I am unable to go past 800x600, I cannot find a way to locate my system monitor to tell it what monitor I am using in hopes then I can change my screen resolution.

I also tried EnvyNG-GTK and it won't loaded, even upgraded to Core, then the EnvyNG icon disappears after upgrade, so I can't find a way to make it load so I can find my Nvidea driver and install it.

I am stuck.

What should I do?

Just out of curiosity, did you try: menu> system> administration>hardware drivers?

Yes I did, I tried enabling the NVIDEA Accelerated Driver (Version 96), all it did was scramble the entire screen and I had to reinstall all over again because I couldn't get it off. I know EnvyNG has the right driver, just can't get it to work, it's the lowest driver version available, the oldest one.

How do I find a drop down box with a selection of available monitors for me to choose? I'm thinking that might help the resolution problem.

Why did Ubuntu take the Screens and Graphics off of their new 8.10 version? That really helped alot, IMHO.

This part of your post has me confused...
I also tried EnvyNG-GTK and it won't loaded, even upgraded to Core, then the EnvyNG icon disappears after upgrade, so I can't find a way to make it load so I can find my Nvidea driver and install it.

I hate to have to ask you to start over with an explanation of the steps you took in installing, but that would help us to help you...were you using Ultimate Edition before? 1.8 1.9??? It sounds like you were from the things you are looking for( I know those things have changed)

Ok sorry, I used to use Ubuntu 8.04 and upgraded to 8.10 with the resolution settings that stayed the same.

Then I downloaded the Ultimate Edition and did a complete full partition install, overwriting everything (nothing of importance for me keep anyway).

What I did was downloaded EnvyNG's deb package (GTK version) and installed it. Tried to use it as it was installed and it won't load. Then the package manager icon came up and had a EnvyNG -Core as a upgrade, so I installed that. Then the EnvyNG icon disappeared from the App/System Tools.

Hope this clears up any confusion.

Well, dammit.

Ok I figured out how to use the terminal part.

I typed "envyng -t" for the text installation.

Found my driver version NVIDIA 71.89.04, the oldest driver available since my card is old as dirt.

It installed it.

Then asked me if I wanted to reboot, so I selected "yes"

After it booted up, it stopped. It won't load.

So version 96 screws up the UI, now 71 won't load.

The oldest version used to work for 8.04, but now it won't for 8.10

Arggh!

Why they removed "Screens & Graphics" from 8.10 is beyond me.

I'm reinstalling it all over again as I type. I'm hoping for another solution.

I really like how Ultimate Edition looks, just wanna change my resolution to 1024x724 instead of 800x600.

*sighs*

Ok, maybe I missed it somewhere, what is your card again...you know using just the "oldest" driver doesn't guarantee that it will work...it has to be the correct driver for the card...Leadfingers has a section under "Newbies" that has many cards listed and their respective drivers...and you're right the changes have many of us baffeled, places we knew to look for setting are gone, so we have to start all over to find them  stick with it, it may take a while, but I'm sure with the help you can get here, you can make it work...a reinstallation might be in order also. I know it's a pain, but sometimes it's the easiest way
