I'm looking to buy a new computer soon, I'm wondering if anyone has advice on whether to get an ATI or Nvidia. I've heard that Nvidia has high failure problems, so I'm leaning towards an ATI 4850 (on a budget). The problem is I'm wondering if I'll be able to run programs similar to the following with an ATI in Linux or Windows.

Also, I'm thinking of getting one of the cheaper Core i7's to go with the system. It has 4 cores, and since it has HT (I think) Intel claims it will appear as 8 threads in the OS. I read somewhere that Linux supports practically unlimited threads, is there an actual limit? Will I see any performance increase compared to a current quad core?

I agree with strider, do your homework...I believe the card you are looking at is one of the newest??? Do the research on drivers!!! ATI is slow to provide driver support...

I would think the 4850 would be suppported just fine by now. Looks like you're going to be doing some pretty intense video editing though, is the 4850 going to have the horsepower? I really don't know. Well, I guess transcoding is mainly a CPU intensive app, not so much GPU. Anyway, I'd think you'd be fine with this card. I think, generally speaking, nVidia is a little easier to work with under Linux, but that doesn't mean you'll have a problem with this card. If it's what you want, go for it.

For those apps I think you're looking at using Windows in a virtual machine or dual booting. Possibly WINE, but I'm not big a fan of emulators personally so I can't say much about using WINE for something like that. You do have options though.

I've not heard that Linux supports "practically unlimited threads"... <scratching head> I suppose it's possible.

One card that another Admin "Cab' suggested to me was a, Nvidia 8800 GT OC which he runs and I believe Daddyx3 also uses...not disappointed at all..

Thanks for the replies, I guess I have some more thinking to do about this, maybe I'll just wait for the next new batch of cards before deciding.

Honestly, I think the 8800GT cards are the best bang for the buck right now. You can get a really nice card for around $100

ATI and Nvidia are the market leaders in GPUs. When you upgrade your graphics card, you can usually choose between products of same price and positioned from both companies. ATI video card I had and I was glad I have.Now nVidia graphics card and I am satisfied with the overall too. But ATI is better.

I suggest you ti buy ati graphics card because in nvidia graphics card you ma face overheating problem but you cant face this problem in ati graphics card and so ati give more performance then nvidia.
