Open up a terminal(accessories from your start menu) and type sudo modprobe snd-ALC850(you will be prompted for your password-enter it).
Let us know what that does if anything.

It looks like the kernel does not have the driver for your sound card. I would submit a request to Ubuntu and see what they have to say. Or complain to Asus and ask them where the Linux driver for you sound card is and ask them why they assume Everybody uses Windows. Start complaining. If enough people start maybe things will change.

This is a pretty common chipset and onboard audio solution, I would have to say that the kernel that we're using for 1.9 might not be the best for you setup. I would bet you dollars to dough-nuts that another Ultimate Edition release it would work outta da box. Or if your adventuresome try to compile your own kernel. Don't ask about how to do that ... too many how-to's on the web ;)

I should have asked this first. Have you gotten into your BIOS settings and checked to see if your on-board audio is on and activated?

Yes very familar with bios. Was set to work. Found simple solution,Inserted aureal soundcard with 30s chipset.Disabled on board sound.ultimate 1.9 works fine now with sound as does Mint,Vister runs for two minutes while trying to find sound driver and simply quits. Now boxing up to sell on ebay.
Thanks to everyone who tried to help.Long live NIX.As to this motherboard bad investment,Asus still denies mp bios bug. Will not buy their junk anymore either. That is unless I decicide to build another 462 system with a7n8x, it likes most all nix and worked perfectly.Once again thanks!

Great to here. Welcome aboard!!! People are under the misconception that Windows can make any hardware work properly. My on board stuff which is also an Asus does not work without me installing the drivers(no sound, proper graphics or internet can you believe it no internet!!). Almost all Linux distros at least get you on the internet!!!
If the hardware manufacturers started to realize this they would most certainly start offering drivers for the main Linux distros(Debian, Slackware etc.). And never waste your time going to the Microsoft website for any help. I never have gotten even one tidbit of useful information from there. All they say it is something that you have done wrong(Arrogant bastards that they are). I'll be glad when the day comes were I can totally ditch MS(I not far from there now). All I use MS for now is video editing, downloading and encoding.

I couldn't agree more. The last couple computers that my friends/ associates have brought me to repair ended up with a complete fresh install (good'ol ntfs;) ) Once that was done I had the worst looking OS I've ever seen! It took me hours to track down and install the drivers!!!! Couldn't even get on to the internet! Video was literally 16 color/ 4 bit. The folders didnt' even look like folders and the icons were barely distinguishable from others.
Funny how you take these things for granted when you get used to Ultimate Edition or Ubuntu :D
