Recommened ATI driver?

Setting up my kid's Christmas computer, an AMD Phenom II 965 on an AMD motherboard with a radeon 5770 graphics card.
About to install the latest Ultimate Edition Gamers distro and was wondering if I should download the ATI driver from synaptic or if anyone could recommend a better version.
I'm far more used to NVidia, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

You do not download the driver for linux from AMD,It wont work.

Install Ultimate Edition 2.8 then go to system/administration/additional drivers. Select the ATI/AMD FGLRX and select activate and your done.

Should you have any problems with compatibility.

Thanks!
Will do so (along with the Catalyst Control Center, I suppose).
Also, wondered how well the 32bit version worked with only 2gigs ram...had to cut some corners. The kid's going to have to get a job if he wants to bring this thing up to speed. :)

Just now checked out your link. Very helpful!
Hope I don't have to do this, but nice to know I can. Gotta love Linux.

Only had to do this for 6xxx class and 4200 4250 mobile or on board chip sets.

the control file is from ATI cat 10.11 so it has the list for the newer chip sets.

If you need the 10.12 control file that can be done to.

I am 100% positive your card will install fine as is. Yes CCC is included so no worries.
