In the Indian subcontinent, Mediatek based phones/phablets with specifications equal to Samsung Galaxy S3 are selling at quarter the price.
A Quad-core(Mediatek), 1GB ram, 8 MP 1080p video cam, 720p+ display are selling for around $220 and run temple-run 2 on full graphics.

They are all imported from China and rebranded even micromax. Have you see wicked wammy. A Mumbai based company. Except for their name. It looked a complete Samsung ripoff. One should stay away from such phones dev's don't support them.

Under lava there are 2 subsidiaries.
byondtech is another startup.

...you are right, spurious products with fancy brand names. Exceptions are lava, micromax.
Lava is coming up with a new tegra based phone for $400(Rs.25000 approxi).

Are these brands trustworthy? Doesn't sound like it.

Have any of these devices run Ubuntu touch yet?

Lol are you serious..? Just now only very very main stream devices are supported. That's why I bought a nexus when I heard they were thinking of this phone as the base. I tried it once but was not happy with it.

Well, quite a few unofficial devices are supported. Just thought I would ask.

Some developers are building on other devices themselves.

A serious question I think.

Linux is far off when it comes to ARM stuff. Ubuntu has some level of shady support. But dont expect anything like a computer/laptop.
It will still be some years ahead where you could just connect to hdmi and kb/mouse and install linux directly(either ROM or BIOS boot image) and Not be dependent on android.

On the other hand ARM boards are available for desktop replacements that run linux.

Most of these boards are functional at SDK level--mostly for developers...market still needs to develop for increasing consumption.

Im still waiting for the day where i can install linux on such a board(Ultra low powered ARM SoC)....maybe ill see whats in the market.

I personally dont care for phone/phablet...i only make calls.

It's cool that they're trying. Personally I think you want as much competition as possible to emerge in the mobile arena so we don't see a repeat of any completely dominating influence with the hardware. We want competition, so hopefully we can have fair competition within the merits of the programming instead of marketing and shifty business tactics. Like choosing a PC over Mac while PC really represents Windows and Microsoft owns shares in Apple. Totally Legit.
