Midi

Despite many of the developments in the Linux world, sound - ie. MIDI is one area that is still an issue.
It Just does not work straight out of the box.
I have an old music notation software program that loads in Wine but cannot get midi to sound.
I have been using Linux now almost exclusively for about 6 years, but I still have to use Windows to get midi - which most notation programs use.
The advice I get is to use Linux software - Well that is fine but there are no decent programs (or at least none that I know of)
Is any development going to take place in this area - or is it a specialist field?
Thanks
