So what do you guys recomend for the backup sofware? I know that there is a backup utility in Ultimate Edition, but it gives you a default set of files to backup. Are these defualt files enough to get a good restore if you do a lot of rooting around and changing the deep stuff? Just a thought. I recently made a brilliant move to mount my raid0 (thankyou ccal!) to:
Code: Select all
sudo mount -t ext3/dev/md0 /media
insead of :
Code: Select all
mkdir /media/my_new_drive; sudo mount -t ext3/dev/md0 /media/my_new_drive
and wham! No more other drives listed in my nautilus window  So what do you guys recomend as backup?

Personally, I just wrote a script that gzips my entire home folder, adds some choice files (fstab, xorg.conf, menu.lst), and sends it off to my ftp server on a different box once a week. I know.....it's old school, but it works. And I can get to my backup anywhere I have internet access.

Just my $.02

I have intentions of writing a script to do similar user selectable for the end user. Perhaps I should include ftp options... taking care of Raid currently, I assure better then expected results when I finish my raid howto. I should be paid for what I do... would not have to work a no end job making squat for working my A** off.. All goes to support anyways, don't bring me down ;) 2 cents I'd like to have lol

Backing up your data is an excellent idea. I also think backing up you system is a must and I finally found an easy way to do it. The only problem I had was that I already had a couple of videos stored in my home folder and this created problems when Mkisofs tries to create the ISO image. At any rate, I deleted the video files and tried again and now I have a complete "live" DVD of my sytem. I also created a "live distribution" DVD that I can use if need be. This is the link I used: http://www.howtoforge.com/ubuntu-linux- ... emastersys

Check out Remastersys. The link: http://www.howtoforge.com/ubuntu-linux- ... emastersys
The only problem is that you are limited to a 4.7 GB ISO so, if you have a lot of video files, you will have to back them up somewhere first, delete them, create your system backup ISO and burn it, and then you can transfer your video files back to your existing drive. This software is still in development but it does work quite well. I for one am glad I found it
