Dual boot question

Postby Zero Prime » Thu Mar 06, 2008 8:57 am

Here's the deal. I have 2 hard drives and I like to test new distros. I know how to dual boot. Installing two OS's is easy. But here's the question. Every Ubuntu based distro that I've tried wants to be number one. During the install it want to install it's own Grub and of course set it self as the main OS. I know there is an option to not install Grub but then I can't boot the other OS at all. I want to be able to install another OS and use the existing Grub. I also know how to edit Grub, but it still using the Grub from the secondary OS. I don't want that. Does anyone know how to install another OS and use the existing Grub?

Hey ZeroPrime, just outta curiosity, why don't you want it to write another GRUB with the newest install? Have you tried SUPERGRUB disk? You can do all kinds of fun stuff with it. Right now I am tri-booting on two different discs, but just had 1.7 write the latest GRUB update for me when it installed ;)

I don't want to use the Grub on a new install because I don't keep the other OS's on for very long. After partitioning the hardrive of course Grub is deleted and upon boot I get a boot error. I know I can use Supergrub, I even have the live CD, but I would rather just use the existing Grub to avoid having to do all that.

Here are a couple of topics to look at that might help you get things figured out, might not be exactly distro specific to your needs, but might get you going in the right direction:

When you get this all figured out, it would be nice to have a How-To on this subjuect. I've never had the need or the time to do things as you are doing them, but very good knowledge to have none the less! :D

If you are still using winblow..check this out might have to put Grub or Lilo into the distro itself though. http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1

By the sounds of it, you can install a specific partition for grub install like /boot and just leave that there all the time. Just go back in and edit your /boot/grub/grub.conf any time you create or delete new partitions for new installs. This sounds like the way to go to me ;)

That would work, if he is using a Disro that uses Grub as default, other wise Lilo will try to overwrite Grub and vice versa..
