My rant of the week!

Postby pch.shot » Fri Feb 15, 2008 1:41 pm

I have decided not to buy any more hardware that does not fully support Linux.
If everyone in the Linux community did likewise maybe we could force the proprietary world to comply!!! Are you listening all you money grabbing companies that assume everyone in the world wants to make Mr. Bill even richer than he already is!!!!! many thanks, pch.shot

To be honest with you pch - I think that it is healthy for *nix to have hardware not be compliant out of the box. Stick with me here ... This gets the "community" thinking together to rectify the problem!!! THIS IS WHAT GPL IS ALL ABOUT! "Community" The *nix community always overcome obsticals. I say, "bring it on".

Likewise!! My brother bought one each for his kids and they have been back to the shop many
times. I won't even work on them. I think we need to pool our brains and come up with a step by step video on how to build a desktop from scratch. Once people found out how easy it really is they would stop buying crap like acer. Speaking of silly laptops have a look at this: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/W ... acbook_air

Just think of all those idle rich that have the most advanced computers. It is too bad that the people that are actually responsible for advancement are probably using a piece of crap!!! I like some crap computers. Generally, they never break down. I have a Maxtor hard drive(6 gig) that is over 10 years old and still works. The best kept secret is that most people don't need to spend a lot of money on a computer. In fact all new computers are crap. You are paying all that money for speed and storage. There really is no such thing as a better quality computer because all the parts are made in the same places. If you get a good piece of hardware that lasts, keep it. You can always find a use for it. I'm running Puppy LInux on that Maxtor quite nicely. lol, pch

I think you've grossly misjudged the general public.
People would rather deal with a known problem, than a unknown solution.

example 1)
Shortly after we met, Mrs LeadFingers decided my OLD box that I didn't use anymore, was hers.
For 3 years I kept after her to let me upgrade it.
Finally in frustration, I put in removable HD trays
Drive 1) her old beloved win98 (with a ton of apps she never used)
drive 2) win XP

Guess which drive she used... till she got to many msgs telling her she couldn't go there & do that with win98.

After tiring of constant maintenance on her win box, I built her a Linux box. (1.6 Gamers of course) :D
AMD 2800+ 250Gb HD 1Gb memory
4 times faster processor, 6 times HD. All set up on a automatic KVM switch.

Guess which box she uses all the time, and I still do maintenance on.

example 2)
Last year my son in law bought a Compaq lappy.
when it got tore-up he put it in the attic.
I asked him why he didn't get it fixed,
he said "laptops are so cheap, I'll just wait and get one that's faster"
Why do you need a faster computer, just to play online poker. He said "because it's faster".

I don't believe the general public will want a self built lappy.
They want faster, from a name they know.

I could be wrong!

ps: I would like to see that how to, I think that would be cool :D

2nd Box: XP (dusty)
