Recommended Apps - ?

Postby dalgar » Thu Feb 14, 2008 5:02 pm

Hey all. OK it's been a couple of weeks now that I have been playing with Ultimate Edition. I have even convinced my neighbor to convert! Whoo Hooo!
Anyway.. Here is a list of apps I used in M$

Nero - This has the ability to burn concurrent copies using multiple burners on a system . Does anyone know if the Linux version will do this? Or is there an alternative?

Dreamweaver 8 - Used heavily in creating websites for Joomla CMS. I use a couple of the plug-ins that plop the code in that I need.
Adobe CS2 - I haven't tried running this in Wine yet. I know GIMP is a fantastic replacement for photoshop since I have used GIMP, but I also use the rest of suite for magazine and newpaper layouts as well. It's a nicely integrated suite. I don't mind switching to a linux replacement though.

DVD - I use various dvd editors and such to create custom dvd's for friends and family. Any good recommendations from the linux world?
DVD player? I tried playing a DVD last night, but seems I don't have the codex for the default app in Ultimate Edition. Is there something that I can get and install w/o any hassels?

Visual Studios 2005. - OK so I found KBasic which will answer some of my needs and it looks like Mono will work fine for development especially if you are used to VS2005 I will report back, but if you know of anything let me know.

PHP and Java - Anyone know of a good linux IDE for this? I am doing a lot of programming in these two languages and would love a good IDE to work in.

Let's see.... I think I covered everything major at the moment.

I really want to get away from relying on M$ apps to do my work.

Thanks a Mil!

To play DVDs with Movie Player:
Open up Synaptic Package Manager.
Look for Totem.
Switch from Totem Gstreamer to Totem Xine.
Install(it will remove Totem Gstreamer and install Totem Xine).
Go here http://ftp.debian-unofficial.org/debian ... libdvdcss/
and install libdvdcss for your computer type using Gdebi(install if you don't have it already).
Now you should be able to watch most DVDs.

Since Bluefish Editor is already on your box, try it first.
I found this article, One mans quest for a PHP IDE for Linux., BUT it's from July 2005 so view it as a starting point not the definitive word.
Another few sites that looked promising PHP how to: IDE Linux & Free Java Editors &IDEs

Thanks LeadFingers.
Google is one of my leading sources for everything. That is how I found out about Ultimate Edition. This forum is on my short list. Everyone here has been extremely helpful to myself and other noobs. That is why I posted. I figured you folks might have some quick answers for the apps questions.

I will let you know what I find to use.

Thanks again!
