Gaming PC just go look at the top of the line alienware then find better
i personally am not a top of the line kinda guy trying to stay at the top costs to much and then you have to deal with glitches ..
thing i would do though is

1) multi monitor hook up
2) not just 1 huge drive multiple moderate drives
3)blue ray drive and all the burnerware u need
4)if yer a gamer u definitely need surround sound and good headset with mic (ventrose)
5) a large external drive for back ups
6)UPS i cant stress a UPS to much there is nothing that will burn yer cookies faster than a surge protector toasting yer
system.. a UPS is the best frontline electrical defense you can get.

other than that just prioritize you wants and needs where you can give a bit and where the best is all that will do

I wouldn't recommend a blue ray burner even with that budget. The cost for the burners and media isn't dropping nearly fast enough to justify the gains. For storage, there are plenty of other adequate solutions.

I would suggest getting multi-monitor setup if you don't have one already. If you are a hardcore multitasker, that really increases productivity.

For the graphics card, I would have to say grab one of ATI's newer higher end cards. Right now they have Nvidia in a tight spot when it comes to performance at little cost/power consumption. Nvidia is pretty good for having decent drivers and their cards 'just work', although I love how ATI comes out swinging and keeps Nvidia on their toes. As always check sources for whatever card you get on how well it works with Linux.

Solid state drives offer one of the best performance increases you can get from an upgrade. They too are still pretty pricy so if you opt for one, don't go for the biggest drive you can find.

Keep those old hard drives and set them up in a raid, a file server, multibooting, or just extra storage.
Core i7 920(working on a decent OC), x58 ASUS P6T Deluxe V2, 6GB DDR3 1600, EVGA 8800GTS512, Silencer 750W PSU, CoolerMaster V8, Red Antec900
