USB to Serial Port Adapter

Postby iceman_ca » Fri Jan 23, 2009 9:02 pm

HI All:

I have a USB to Serial Adapter I used to Windoze , and the computer I use has no serial Port. I have a few programs that I run in wine, and require the use of a serial connection.

Normally I would have booted up into windoze, but last week I decided to use Ultimate Edition as my only Operation System. It figures I need to use the program week after I do the final switch over.

TO make a long story short, is there a driver around I can use for adapting USB to serial. I have a disk but it appears the file needs compiling, something which I would sooner tackle at a later date.

Thank You

It is an FTA box ( captain in this case, but could be several others) It uses a serial port, and a null cable for commmunication. Most of the time the comunication is from the comp to the box, but can be the other way.

There is a adapter cable that which plugs in a usb port and along with software makes the computer see it as a serial port. This allows the STB loader program to download the file to the box via the box's serial port.

The software generally assigns the adapter as serial port 4.

So tell the loader to download the file to serial port 4, and to the box.

The driver i am looking for makes the hardware adapter work.
The file attached is a redhat 8 file, that needs to be compiled according to the what the instructions say. There are three files, under redhat 8,9,and 73 I assume the rev. verision. I have also included the instruction file.

You might want to consider paying a couple hundred bucks and upgrading(at least another motherboard for 50 bucks). This seems like a lot of effort.

Normally compiling is pretty easy...
Open a terminal
Navigate to where you have parked the file you need to compile
Example cd /home/leadfingers/desktop
then you run these two commands, one at a time (waiting each time till it's done before moving on)
Code: Select all
sudo make

Code: Select all
sudo make install

I don't know if it will help your situation but you might try the package setserial
or try running the old windows adapter program under wine.

Another option is to use Virtualbox or VMPlayer to run the few Windows programs you use. This way you won't have to log in and out. USB support is quite good. You won't be able to run 3D however because the virtual drivers do not have access to the pci bus.
Virtualbox is easy to set up or you can go here: http://bagside.com/
and try out the new Windows 7 pre-configured for VMPlayer. All you have to do is install either Virtualbox or VMPlayer.

In my research of USB-to-Serial adapters, I've learned several valuable things such as not all USB-to-Serial port adapters work the way you would expect a standard serial port to work. Most do not support 5 bit data used for FSK RTTY transmission and most, but not all, will do radio control, CW and PTT.
