sdb2 being the partition in question...
THIS is the partition I have been trying to recover files from. Apparently, something went wrong when I tried to merge the 2 NTFS parts together from within XP using Partition Magic. Now its reported as an unformatted drive. Using a recovery sw (dont remember which..) I can see the files - but am only able to recover them as RAW files, meaning no titles etc...

Can this be done from with in *NIX, without playing with a live CD? I have searched for recovery progs, but I'm not having much luck...

I had the same problem, when re-partitioning and such. I went to Gnome Partition editor and noticed that its mount point had been deleted, so I made a new mount point. Then to access the files I had to do "sudo nautilus" to get access to them, because it was owned by 'root' with no permissions set for access by anyone else. Or did you get it figured out already? I'm brain washed with GUI, I like the visual of whats going on, cause I'm a terminal tard

Nope- still not straight. I am the point where I'm just gonna delete it and say good byr to all those gigs of DL stuff...

I dont think Gnome will help here.. this is a NTSF partition (or was anyway..) Apparently, partition magic wiped out whatever is in there that says how and what the partition is.
Hmm... lemme go look at it in gnome again..

Not a lot of info...

Screenshot12.png

I can boot XP and use a recovery program to see whats there, I was able to recover raw files w/ no names or other info- but thats a lotta damn files to try and figure out names of. When I run the recover sw, it also sees the files by name, but the recovered files (AVI, MPG) wont play. If I recover them as raw files, they play.. but I have no idea which episode of say, The Sopranos it is or what video or DVD it may be.
I may have to just bite the bullet and recover what I can as a raw file and try and rename them all after viewing them. I could care less about win apps, as I have no real use for them anymore. I keep all my photoshop stuff, as I am able to use PS7 under crossover. The rest is stuff like vids and old movies, hopefully no photography stuff (most of which I had backed up to dvd.)

It sounds like a few problems. Does XP see this partition without the aide of recovery software? If so, what does XP see?(file names or raw data?) It seems as though you've lost all associations within XP for these types of files? Can you re-accociate them within XP (right-click>>properties>> open's with). Do they even have an extension labled on them from within XP (ex. .exe, .avi, .jpg)? idk, you've prob. done all this. All I know is, I understand your pannic! I just went through this with my VISTA---> Ultimate Edition transition, I had lots of pannic moments ;) Got through it all though. I had to re-install VISTA just to be able to convert the type of partion it was  , then transfer as much as I could to other drives (lost about 125GiB), then reformat the jacked up partition that VISTA created just so I could mount it in Ultimate Edition

Windoze knows theres SOMETHING there.. butsays its not formatted and offers to reformt it. Also- now my XP wont boot from the GRUB on my 320, so I have to boot it from my 250HDD. I musta screwed up something with the damn grub editor... GRRRRRR...

Its time to clean house and reinstall win on the 250 in a small partition and just keep a good working copy of 1.4 on there for just in case. My main OS is 1.6, as it seems to be working ok (minus the lockups I been getting when running Deluge torrent.) I got my /home all in good shape- just need to clean up that fstab business (I think thats where that problem lies..?)

Maybe one day I'll get it ALL workingright at the SAME time... then again, maybe not.. :o

Well, good luck with that ;) It's always good to clean house every now and then any way. Shame that your Partition "Magic" worked so well... now you see it ... poof! Now you don't! I finally got my little HTPC box partitioned off right and have a separate /home , /media, / , and swap :D I should be good to go now! If anything happens to the system, I'll wipe it clean and keep my goodies ;) I'm going to do a How-To on it, prob. tonight. Once again, good luck. Maybe somebody can come in with a miracle cure for you before you loose all your goodies forever.
ps- you ever used Azureus? I really like it. I used Deluge for a while, but too ugly for me ;) and Azureus never locks on me.

Utorrent is my favorite, but I have used azureus (I like the frog logo..) lol but the new version was killin my cpu.. i didnt need al that crap with the player. i had utorrent running in wine on my 1.4 install. Then I went to deluge, which I really liked- until the last couple of releases.. oh well- the price of progress :|

I have some suggestions for recovery sw from another forum I belong to. Gonna try those tonight and see what happens. If not, I'll bck up the raw data and worry about it some other time.

I wanna gets me some HTPC going.. but I guess we need another thread for that ;)
