Postby oO-Sbrok-Oo » Thu Oct 25, 2007 7:59 pm

Hi all.
I'm Silvio, 25 yo Italian student.

I'm new in linux world and I chose Ubuntu for it's simplicity.

Some days of test and information serching... and I discover Ultimate Edition!
It's genial!
I really like all in Ultimate Edition!

Now Waiting for Ultimate Edition 1.6 (and 1.7 too)...

I can support Ultimate Edition 1.6 diffusion but I have some problems...
I have an optical fiber connection (10MBps down and 10Mbps up) with fastweb provider.
This net is natted and cause many problems with P2P.
No problem with eMule (eMule Adunanza is an optimized morph for my connection).
Many problems with Torrent:
1) I never used torrent and I have no idea how it work.
2) On the web I find many sites talking about incompatibility from torrent and natted net.

Any idea?
If you halp me I support you...

All the best!

P.S.: sorry for my bad english...

i dont know alot about torrents since i dont use them often but i can share some of what ive learned.

what is a torrent?

basically you d/l the .torrent file. this is a very same file typically only a few kb. its basically contains a record of the files included. basically its a link file.

so how do i get this .torrent?

you usually get the .torrent file from whats called a tracker. as the name implies a trackers is a site that tracks the file. who has the whole file/part of it/none of it ect.

so how do i actually get the data i want?

you load it into a bit torrent client. a few good clients are utorrent (windows also runs on linux with wine). azureas is another decent client with both windows and linux versions. after you load it it contacts the tracker and gets a list of all seeders and leechers as well as how much data each has. people that have the whole file are known as seeders (uploaders). everyone else is known as a leecher (downloaders) these only have part of the file. seeders are self explaintory they send you data. leechers are essentially downloaders however they also upload at the same time.

but how can leechers upload and download while not having the whole file?

a torrent is split up into pieces (im sure you remember this from emule). each piece is a small part of the file. once someone has a complete piece it notifies all other peers of that and will then be able to upload that piece to all other peers who need it.

how does nat play a part in all this?

basically if you are natted (ports not forwarded) you will get an unconnectable warning. dont be alarmed though. alot of people think that because of this they cant download. but this isnt totally true. you will still be able to connect to and download from anybody that is connectable but not those that are also unconnectable. since unconnectable users cant connect to other unconnectables there downloads may take longer because there is fewer people that they can download from but chances are they will still be able to max out there connection.

sorry if some of this doesnt make sense if your confused ill try to explain in more detail anything that confuses you. also if anyone else has anything to add please feel free. cheers :)

Thank you very much cowboy and drama!

If I understand, with torrent we can be:
connectable leecher from connectable seeder
unconnectable leecher from connectable seeder

but can't be:
connectable leecher from unconnectable seeder
unconnectable leecher from connectable seeder

It's true?

your close.

first ill start will the seeder. remember seeders only upload never download since they have the whole file so a seeder will never connect to another seeder.

connectable seeders connect to both connectable and unconnectable leechers (downloaders)
unconnectable seeders can only connect to connectable leechers.

now on to leechers. remember leechers are downloaders but they can still upload parts that they have (a part is usually 512kb-4mb it just depends)

connectable leechers connect to unconnectable and connectable leechers and seeders
unconnectable leechers can only connect to connectable leechers and seeders.

so in summary say you are in a swarm of 10 peers (the swarm is just the amount of people active on that file) there are 4 seeders (2 connectable 2 unconnectable) 6 leechers including you (3 connectable 3 unconnectable you being 1 of them unconnectable). you would only connect to 2 of the seeders and 3 of the leechers since your unconnectable. ive made a diagram to try and illistrate this (please see attachment)

notice how connectables can connect to anyone except seeds dont connect to other seeds. but unconnectables can only connect to connectables. an unconnectable can never connect to another unconnectable

correct. to become a seeder you dont need to do anything aside from download the whole file. one you get the whole file you become a seeder automatically but after you get the whole file you need to leave you client open so you can help upload to the others that want it.

the annatomy of a file is like this.

say the total size is 1.37 gb. this file is then broken down into pieces. say 707 pieces each 2mb in size. each of them pieces are numbered. 1,2,3,4,5,6 ect on up to 707. same there are 3 people in the swarm (me you and one other). me and the other person are seeders and both are connectable. you are the only leecher (doesnt matter if you are connectable or not since the rest are connectable). i start uploading piece 1 to you the other seeder start piece 2. when you complete downloading piece 1 you will then send and acknowledgement to me saying you completed that piece as well as another one to the other seeders so he will never try to send you the piece i already did. this called simply send got. i will then start seeding you another piece. and the whole process starts over again. once you get the last piece you then have the whole file and become a seeder. you then send another acknowledgement to each person in the swarm called am seed. you then disconnect from all seeds. the above is the same even if there are more leechers that have parts you need. as you can seed this is an example of a small swarm so speeds may not be that great in this example. but on a swarm with hundreds or thousands of peers speeds would be very high this why bittorrent is the chosen peer 2 peer protocol for very large files. also unlike emule there is no waiting in line.

Actually, I think you can announce your self and your file on a tracker, and start the proccess that way. Here is a begginers guide to uploading torrents / starting new torrents: http://forums.mystery-axiom.com/showthread.php?t=24170
