[SOLVED] 'Black Screen' after update

Help and support for Ultimate Edition 2.9

[SOLVED] 'Black Screen' after update

Postby aL1 » Mon Nov 14, 2011 4:51 pm

[SOLVED]

I've been using Ultimate Edition for quite awhile without any problems, but lately, after updating with 'Update Manager', all I get is a black screen immediately after the plymouth splash screen when I reboot to complete installing the updates...it just hangs there...any ideas or fixes?

BTW, a great OS-

Thanks-

I've had that hanging issue as you mention, the bootsplash just hangs after rebooting from update. I also run the ATI which at times can be stubborn ... they usually seem to lag in Linux support a few months with the new kernel releases. But your model and kernel should have it all together, no driver issues.

Have you been able to reboot into "No hanging" since the last issue? Has it sorted itself out on the next reboot? or still hanging or black screen?

I have found by cleaning/removing old kernels out via "Ubuntu Tweak", and some "Startupmanager" tweaking helps speed of boot process and smooth the graphical start-up process.

It still hangs after the plympouth logo...but I have the partition backed-up, so it's like 5-minutes or so to recover it with Acronis-

I'll take a look at Ubuntu Tweak & StartUpManager-

I did read somewhere that booting into 'safe-mode' and re-installing the AMD Driver worked for someone-

Cheers, good point. That is another possibility, and one with little possibility of damage.

The ATI does seem to be stiff and stubborn at times, especially if a Kernel update had triggered the graphic issue.
I like that idea of un-install the "hardware driver" (graphic-AMD/ATI) , reboot into safemode then install the available AMD/ATI hardware driver for your 4870. Then reboot.

Hawks-SOAD has a sweet card too, I have a feeling he has some experience with The Almighty Radeon. :)

So booting into 'safe-mode' and re-installing the AMD Driver did resolve the black screen issue, but then I found other things that didn't work, that did before updating ATI...so I decided to just re-install 2.6.3-

After re-installing 2.6.3, the same issues appeared, leading me to conclude that updating via 'Update Manager' breaks linux on my pc-

I think I fixed everything, but even though ATI looks like it's installed and seems to be working, 'Hardware Drivers' reports that 'NO proprietory drivers are in use in this system'-

I checked 'FGLRX' in Terminal, and got:

    pc@PC1:~$ fglrxinfo
    display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
OpenGL version string: 3.3.11251 Compatibility Profile Context

ATI Catalyst information reports 'Catalyst Version' is 11.11-

I can configure 'Extra' Visual Effects in 'Appearance Preferences' successfully-

EDIT: If it ain't broke, don't fix it-
