Installing 2.9 over existing 2.8?

Help and support for Ultimate Edition 2.9

Installing 2.9 over existing 2.8?

Postby Benbow » Wed Mar 30, 2011 1:40 pm

I have been using 2.8 for a little while now and have followed the versions from 1.3 and up. I have just installed win 7 and I am running 2.8 quite successfully side by side. My question is, can I install UU 2.9 over 2.8? It is essential that I leave win 7 untouched as it is a work programme.
What is my best way of replacing 2.8 with 2.9 and leaving win 7 untouched?

Ultimate Edition 2.8 installed side by side or on its own partition or drive ?

If side by side, you will loose windows 7

If on its own partition or Drive (done right) then just wipe Ultimate Edition 2.8 and install Ultimate Edition 2.9 and grub will do its job.

There is no upgrade option sorry, fresh install only.

2.8 is installed using it's own installer and has 500gb of a 1 tb drive on it's own partition.
Thanks for your prompt response.

Then as long as it is on its OWN partition and NOT side by side.

Select the drive Ultimate Edition 2.8 is on once your home folder is backed up of course.

Delete Ultimate Edition 2.8 partition with disk utility , then start the install and select the free space 3 GB to swap and the rest to / root.

Grub should auto detect the windows 7 partition and away you go.

Should be quite simple.

It should be noted that while there are minor tweakings in 2.9 Gnome, both are 10.10 based. 2.9 as all odd releases does have KDE and several other GUIs in addition, but if you are just running Gnome in 2.8, I don't see a reason to upgrade

Very good note, I also thought about mentioning this as well.
