How do I make a boot splash

Postby dougal » Wed Nov 03, 2010 1:55 pm

How do I make a boot splash of my own? I want to get widescreen resolutions catered for.
If someone can point me in the right direction I would be grateful and share my results.

Thanks.

You can go to lib/plymouth/themes, find one you like copy and past it to where you want to work on it, (or go to gnome-look and search splash screens and find one you like), Note : If you are wanting to rework the solar theme or sunrise theme some operations may very from this how to but basically the same.
# 1 Open it
# 2 open the background image with gimp,(I assume you are familiar with gimp!) scale the image to your resolution, replace the old image with your new image and save, (you can also change the color of the animation(s) in gimp),
# 3 In the theme folder of the splash you are working on, you will find a .plymouth, open it, change the items I have in Red to what ever you will name your new splash, and save, and close,
# 4 Rename the .plymouth (NEWNAME.plymouth)
NOTE: the variables of the splash are in the .script, adjustments to the inner workings are made in the code, Happy coding! :geek:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE
[Plymouth Theme]
Name=NEWNAME
Description=NEWNAME
ModuleName=script

[script]
ImageDir=/lib/plymouth/themes/NEWNAME
ScriptFile=/lib/plymouth/themes/NEWNAME/NAMEOF.script
(.script that is in your new splash folder)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# 5 Now close your new splash folder and rename it ( If not done already) , Say you are working on your desktop, you can terminal here from scripts or
" cd Desktop " in terminal, Then to install your new splash, Replace NEWNAME with the name of your splash.

Code: Select all
sudo cp -R NEWNAME/ /lib/plymouth/themes/

Code: Select all
sudo update-alternatives --install /lib/plymouth/themes/default.plymouth default.plymouth /lib/plymouth/themes/NEWNAME/NEWNAME.plymouth 100

Code: Select all
sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth

(#here, choose the number of the theme you want to use then hit enter)

Code: Select all
sudo update-initramfs -u

# 6 TEST IT !
Download and untar test.sh, put it where you like, Double click. and run in terminal, enter your password, press enter, if all went well your new splash should show for about 20sec, no need to reboot! Good Luck ! Have Fun! :D
