You can go to lib/plymouth/themes, find one you like copy and past it to where you want to work on it, (or go to gnome-look and search splash screens and find one you like), Note : If you are wanting to rework the solar theme or sunrise theme some operations may very from this how to but basically the same.
# 1 Open it
# 2 open the background image with gimp,(I assume you are familiar with gimp!) scale the image to your resolution, replace the old image with your new image and save, (you can also change the color of the animation(s) in gimp),
# 3 In the theme folder of the splash you are working on, you will find a .plymouth, open it, change the items I have in Red to what ever you will name your new splash, and save, and close,
# 4 Rename the .plymouth (
NEWNAME.plymouth)
NOTE: the variables of the splash are in the .script, adjustments to the inner workings are made in the code, Happy coding!

" cd Desktop " in terminal, Then to install your new splash, Replace NEWNAME with the name of your splash.

# 6 TEST IT !
Download and untar test.sh, put it where you like, Double click. and run in terminal, enter your password, press enter, if all went well your new splash should show for about 20sec, no need to reboot! Good Luck ! Have Fun!
