You might try this, if you mean that the Windows installation is not present in the Grub menu at boot and therefore not selectable:
Code: Select all
sudo update-grub

That should update your Grub, and pick up all bootable drives/Partitions it can see and add them to the Grub Boot Menu.

Could I ask what the root password is? Seems to be a root account active with a password, but I didnt set it.

These instructions seem to no longer apply to 2.8:

How to enable root login ( for newbies )

Postby Blackwolf » Tue Aug 18, 2009 10:47 pm
Navigate through System-->Administration--> Login Window, I was presented with the Login Window Preferences window. On the Security tab I found an empty checkbox labelled 'Allow local system administrator login'. I ticked this box and pressed 'Close'. I had already set a root password xxxxxx as described below ( In Green ), and when I rebooted Ultimate, I only had to enter Username: root and Password: xxxxxx in the opening screen to open Ultimate with full root privileges.
To set the password for 'root':- Go to System-->Administration-->Users and Groups. Enter your User password. Select 'root' in the Users settings window and press 'Properties, Set and confirm your new password xxxxxx for root in the Account 'root' Properties window. Press 'OK' and 'Close'.
Done. :D

This has been addressed in the last week, but the short answer is go to Synaptic, type in "kubuntu" in the search box at the upper top, click on the kubuntu desktop file that shows up, and do the install from there. It's pretty strauightforward

right, the even number Ultimate Edition releases only have gnome installed, in order to get KDE, E17, etc., you hvae to install it from Synaptic. The odd number releases have all the GUIs installed automatically

Every time a new Ultimate Edition rolls out we get the question " Can I upgrade Ultimate Edition ? " The short answer is NO ! Each Ultimate Edition is, shall we say individually wrapped! TheeMahn is, ( and has been working on ) a way to do this!, You see, Ultimate Edition is not a Ubuntu derivative, meaning, TheeMahn doesn't take Ubuntu and build Ultimate Edition on it, He works his own ( magic ) base, off of Ubuntu basic, So untill TheeMahn gets a handle on a way to do this, A fresh install is the only way to be sure you get the newest and best Ultimate Edition experiance! You see Canonical (the bringers of Ubuntu ) changes things all the time and TheeMahn has no control over this, TheeMahn strives to deliver the most stable release he can with ALL the bells and whistles! (and then some!) while still having to adhere to licensing and restrictions ! (All over the world!) so as you can see this is no easy task! Ultimate Edition Is not a "Cookie cutter" Distro rather a "One of a kind" every time! If you should decide to take it upon yourself to "experiment" and upgrade from one numbered releases (10.04 to 10.10) You do so at your own risk! This is not to say that common upgrade cannot be done, They can! But as with any "upgrade" if you don't know exactly what you are doing (and even if you do) you run the risk of "Glitching" or "Killing" your system! so it is best to some research before you upgrade anything! And guess what !? If you are reading this you are already in one of the best places to get help and information on these, as well as other issues!

You can drag your .mozilla & . thunderbird folder to another drive & restore them after the install. If your not sure how....just ask :D

There is a way to do so, I have never told anyone how other then Cab. Do you want to know why? Results, is the answer. Ok I am running 2.6 as we speak, I hope you of all ppl know why. I am going to attempt to upgrade to Ultimate Edition 2.8. I know you will feel I am running 2.8 far from the truth. I am not going to BS you or anyone else. In my DVD burner I have Ultimate Edition 2.6.1 on USB stick I have Ultimate Edition 2.9. No matter the outcome I am coming back. One or the other ;)

I hate to show this...

I want to be straight, this is not for the regular user, if you are not comfortable in a terminal, download Ultimate Edition 2.8, straight forward.

Last chance...

Lets see if I make it back. can't imagine this:
Third party sources disabled

Some third party entries in your sources.list were disabled. You can re-enable them after the upgrade with the 'software-properties' tool or your package manager.

RIP, thanks Canonical:

29 proggies you do not think I should not have?

Onward:

Now I am screwed, if I do not bounce back. Yes, that is 1 MB a sec and still 20 min.

I know enough to say do not attempt to do as I am doing if you have NVidia Graphics. I do know the issues in Ultimate Edition 2.8 as well as Ubuntu 10.10. Should it be my job to fix those issues? I do not work for NVidia, nor do I work for Canonical. I want you really to think about that 1.

You guys should be glad I have 0 problems destroying My current O/S to make a better O/S for you. Not that I was not writing a new one as it was.

It is down question #1:

We are now done:

This is a show stopper to me.

I can download the entire dvd and install it in less time. I will let it finish. The computer I have is no slouch & is going to take 2 hours to install?

We can argue, your home folder, you will lose. Bite the bullet, backup your homefolder and install Ultimate Edition 2.8.

I suppose it does matter in the way you installed Ultimate Edition to begin with. I am sure you can see I have multiple hard disks, think first. My SSD has failed on me, it is under warranty. You gentlemen bought that for me. Probably would cut my installation time in half& still does not warrant me to teach you how to upgrade.

Amazing:

right b4 reboot, not looking good...

Results:

Well now, what r we running? Do I suggest it certainly not.

If you must know:
Code: Select all
update-manager --devel-release

Your milage may vary and I take no responsibility for any errors, or issues you may witness. You will not get Ultimate Edition 2.8 theme etc. and must add such software manually. Ultimate Edition 2.6.1 will have said such software & themes, BTW did I mention I found to be bulletproof?
