Hello muddinyoreye and welcome to the U.E Forum.

You need to understand that , If your Architecture is 32 bit = NO 64 bit will not run on your machine.
If your Architecture is 64 bit, you can run 32 bit as well on your system.

so is it safe to say , that if the live 64bit iso dvd works and brings up the gnome desktop with the installer from the dvd rom and goes throgh the installation process without any problems, that means the systems architechure is fully 64 bit capable?

muddinyoreye .

If you have install the 64 bit on your machine as you have said.
Then you have to log in to your BIOS and change the BOOT option to start up from your HDD.
If you have installed the system once , then there is no need to install it once more right.
So Log in to your BIOS and change the BOOT to start from your HDD and please Update on your issue.

Thank you.
