Help & support for Ultimate Edition 2.6

Newbie problems

Postby Plozi » Thu May 20, 2010 2:24 pm

okey got some newbie questions have to learn things sooner or later :P

the main problem I am having now is the Drivers for my Graphics card I got a XFX Nvidia Geforce 9800+
I have tried to find alot of posts about this issue and tried different things like switching to the "older" kernel, Deleting my current drivers, trying to install new drivers etc, all of this just leads to more problems for me, might be that I am new to this game so that is why I am asking some more experienced ones.

for instance When I switched to the older kernel I did like some in post said "delete your current drivers and restart, start up in .21, so I did and the loading screen came up tho really low resolution, and then suddenly it all went black and I couldn't really do anything, my previous experience with hardware tells me that this might be some Hertz problems dunno tho,

then i tried to follow this nice guide wich told me to go to the Nvidia site and download the newest driver and adding some things to the blacklist, so I did, when I entered the command to start the new driver it just told me it couldn't open it

so here I am pretty stuck in my own $#!% and a bit annoyed :P

In advance thank you for your help :)

Hi Plozi,

Does that mean you have tried the solutions in this thread?
Nvidia issues post here please.
I'll look for anything specific to your card.

You might try booting into recovery mode then reconfigure xorg (2nd option) then yes once it finishes click cancel then the 1st option and boot normally or drop to the prompt and login then run
Code: Select all
sudo service gdm start

and see if that will get the desktop going it has worked for me before.
;)
If it says gdm is already running use restart instead of start.

Not safe mode, but recovery mode which you choose at the grub screen. From where you are just use resume then reboot and choose recovery mode at the grub screen.

So is that Ultimate Edition 2.6 64 bit and you're giving the kernel number 2.6.32?

If it is, the best thing to do since you have already attempted other fixes which will only make it harder if not impossible to straighten out is to do a re-install. After the install and you reboot removing the livedvd.
Wait for the desktop to fully load then reboot, then once more choosing the 2.6.32-21 kernel each time. This configures plymouth so it should be done first.

Then choose the 2.6.32-21 kernel and install the graphics driver in
System > Administration > Hardware Drivers
Once you install the nvidia driver to the 2.6.32-21 kernel and before rebooting run
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get purge linux-headers-2.6.32-22 linux-image-2.6.32-22-generic

when that finishes reboot then install the server kernel per Blackwolf's instructions
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-server linux-image-server linux-server

You will have to reboot after it finishes.
That's it
You should have a working desktop with the nvidia driver and it should work with either kernel.

I know it's a pain but it's the fastest most reliable way to get it up and working right.
