Help & support for Ultimate Edition 2.6

Re: Laptop issues post here please.

Postby razy60 » Tue May 25, 2010 5:41 pm

HI, my issues are Battery usage is extremely high, the laptop is warmer to the touch, and the fan is constantly running at a high speed, I have read various posts here and on other forums with regard to this although not all laptops suffer, it seems most of the newer ones do, my old inspiron 6400 worked perfectly with no problems no matter how i messed with it, This one though is not so stable, the heat is from the gpu as it seems to come from that area the fan is mainly used to cool the cpu so it isnt helping the gpu. These problems make me not want to use linux on my laptop as much as i used too, which is a shame realy. :(
It is good for surfing the web and frying my breakfast on at the same time though, Now that's what i call multi tasking.

In Karmic the CPU frequency was set to Powersave by default at least on my laptops. In Lucid 2.6/2.7 it is set to Ondemand by default and runs considerably hotter that way.
Right click on the top panel and select Add to Panel then select CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor and click Add then Close.
Left click on the new applet and change it to Powersave and you should see the temp. start dropping.
I have the sensor applet on my panel so I can see the difference.

WARNING: THERE APPEARS TO BE AN ISSUE WHEN INSTALLING SENSORS
PLEASE SEE Admin-Amir's post below

Instructions for installing sensors removed until this issue is fixed.

Hello Raz.

well it looks like this can be A Big problem to install the "sensors"!!!
I have run test on the command and it will CLEAN Half of your machine = Like in Ubuntu Tweak issue.
So just as A WORMING for you on this point that can be very problematic at this point of time.

Try to Un Install the conky - all from synaptic & Delete it from the start up programs.
Then see if it low the CPU + fan hard work on your machine.

Hi, just trying the simple solution, removed conky and reduced cpu scaling to powersave will see how that goes, if it is not a success i may try to install sensors, but seeing as there seems to be a possible issue with that it will be a last resort. if it all goes wrong I can always reinstall as everything is backed up.

Raz here is something to try.

The issue with the High CPU use + fan under bug fix.
So the solution that I can see is with corrupted indexing.

And the solution:

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install tracker-utils

Then:

Code: Select all
tracker-processes -r

Then Restart your machine and see if this fix the problem.

Amir will give your suggestion a try(where do you get the time to find all this information, i barely have time to try out the fixes).
As for the cpu, i have the scaling monitor installed. under power save, Yes it ran cooler in certain areas however it causes major playback issues and effects web surfing especially where there are large graphics and or video in the page, So it is of some use but you have to constantly be aware that if there are problems it may also be the cpu scaling so you have to switch back to on demand to smooth things out. going to keep testing to see if there is an optimum setup.

Cheers Amir so far its working laptop is running much cooler and the fan is not running for no reason. :D
As far as the cpu scalling monitor is concerned i have to set it to on demand at every reboot as it always starts in performance. I have also installed the FGLRX ati driver under hardware drivers as this has helped with the gui,(uncontrollable mouse, programs taking a long time to start etc.), Previous attempts to install this driver didnt take but it seems to work now. Still not working in the .22 kernel though. I am not going to mess with laptop much more as it seems 2.7 will be here soon. :)

Cheers again

Hello Raz.

Thank you for the Update on your issue Raz.
About 2.7 well yes you right,I from my point of view will make one more step in the process Raz.
This process will be to Upgrade the Kernel to the RC1 2.6.35 :o
Yes Raz The Team work with this Kernel for some reasons of remove issues from our way.
It works just fine Raz,Faster, stable ,and swiftfox is faster then in the 2.6.34 kernel.
Just something to share with you,and the users on the site ;)

running 2.6.1 (amongst others :P) on my lgx110 pos.... 1 g ram atom,
i am looking into a minimalist approach... want to know where to cut the fat..... what programs are essential to it running and what are not, i understand about most of the software, but i'm looking into resources and alternatives i've run 2.8 lite it was nice, some things did not work properly not sure if it was python or whatnot...
with 2.6.1 i have an awesome conky and code works with it (thanks Thee Mann) i also am playing with Oz Unity 1.0 (yeah i've been busy) and most here should also know me from there forum...... is there a way to trim 2.6.1 down ?

depending on the responce i may just burn and run from a usb for xperiments.....

speaking of that, i've gotten the idea to mod my netbook with a "permenant" usb chip yes it will kill one usb slot permantly, what are youir takes on that, running ubuntu obviously, i barely use my windows now, just to check my isp mail account as i forgot the password.... haha. ok enough blah blah blah.
