If you have just installed it have you run Update Manager, yet? I have seen some threads talking about selecting certain Kernels in order to get the Nvidia drivers to install. I do not remember which one. I just know that i had to reinstall the OS a couple of times to make sure I was back at Day 1 until I was able to get the Nvidia drivers to install.

My first install, I didn't run update manager, My second install I ran it after a few failed driver installs and tried again.

I am sorry to hear of all you troubles. I am not a Ultimate Edition guru but I have gotten quite a bit of help from this forum. I have the Nvidia 9800 GTX+ card. Perhaps it is more compatible for some reason.

Thanks for all your help tho. My 240gt was the cause of me not being able to use 2.8, my specific card wouldn't even allow it to boot. Hopefully someone has experience with my particular issues.

Just so happens I installed Ultimate Edition 2.8 on a 240 gt a week ago.

Boot to disk and load via safe graphics mode.

Install and repeat safe graphics mode.

I am on my iPod touch in bed right now, I'll need to ask that you do what I did and google a recent nvida ubuntu driver script for custom install.

Once the updated driver was installed, walla worked great.

FYI , 2D will only work in safe graphics mode. Curent driver in additional driver also did not work. Like ati 6000 series, they are just to new.

I also used a custom install script to get my ati cat 10.12s installed and working. The concept will be the same.

Dependancies will need to be met to get the latest drivers installed and eye candy to work.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates

I am told this ppa will also work

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install nvidia-current nvidia-current-modaliases nvidia-settings

Then go to System > Administration > Hardware Drivers and make sure "Nvidia current" is activated.

Ok this is not easy to do on a iPod touch 4g lol.

Thanks for the help, I will try that one again. When I did that before, the driver worked fine, I could run compiz fine, I just could not increase my resolution.

My PC output is routed to my 50" HDTV using DVI to HDMI. I had problems with earlier Nvidia drivers, primarily due to Overscan. My Desktop would overflow the edges of my screen and there were no controls, in Nvidia Settings, to correct for that.

In the past 6 months, the Nvidia drivers, for Ubuntu, now allow me to resize the Desktop. I operate at 1900x1080 and fit the screen perfectly.

That's similar to my problem, if I try to manually increase the resolution with the ppa drivers, the screen just overflows off screen. If it matters, I am just using VGA for my monitor. When I manually installed the drivers, I just used the newest one on NVIDIA's website. Do you think it is worth a shot to use 258.* instead of 260.*?

The last few Nvidia drivers for Ubuntu all have "Resize the Desktop" in the Nvidia Settings. What I have found, though, is that if you are using both a Monitor connected to one DVI port and the HDTV connected to the other side, "Resize the Desktop" is not an option. What I do, if I have to use the monitor, is to disconnect the HDTV from the Nvidia card, temporarily.
