I had the same problem when I first installed 10.10 and Ultimate Edition 2.8.

See this thread for the fix:

nomodeset allowed me to install the driver manually, and everything seemed to go fine. When I rebooted, I got a message (tried to copy, but seems I lost it) that the nvidea driver did not exist, and would I like to boot in low graphics mode.

EDIT: after running nvidia-xconfig again, I rebooted and got the same message. took a picture of it, so here is what it says:
Code: Select all
The following error was encountered. You may need to update your configuration to solve this.

[EE] NVIDIA: Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module.
Please check your
[EE] NVIDIA:   system's kernel log for additional error messages.
[EE] Failed to load module "nvidia" (module-specific error)

Try installing it again or you may have to follow the procedure to purge your system of Nvidia and then reinstall.

Thanks for your continued help.

I purged, blacklisted some things, and tried again, but no dice. The odd thing I have noticed is that after installing them, the Ultimate Edition symbol and loading bar when first booting appears to be at the right resolution, and then the screen flashes a bunch and I get that message.

You (or the installing program) have to update grub after each installation of graphics drivers.(otherwise your system is trying to boot with grub still using its old configuration not yet being aware of the new driver installation.)
Open terminal and type this:

sudo update-grub and reboot. You may have to also run nvidia-xconfig in terminal to get the correct display for your card

Grub updated, but the problem still persists.

Are you exiting to the Terminal Mode, Stopping GDM, Installing the driver, and then Rebooting?

Yes. this is what I have done:
add nomodeset to grub, boot, ctrl + alt + f1, stop gdm, install driver, reboot, error message.
run nvidia-xconfig, reboot, error message.
purged nvidia*, reinstalled driver, nvidia xconfig, reboot, same error message.
update grub, reboot, same error message.

Have you tried loading the next Kernel down, in the Grub Menu, after modifying it, of course?
