Nvidia issues post here please.

Since reinstalling Ultimate Edition 2.7, based upon Ubuntu 10.04, I cannot install the Nvidia drivers 195.36.24 or 256.25 64bit drivers. All I get is an error Distribution Pre-Install Script Failed, Unable to load Kernel Module nvidia.ko.

please try this solution for the Nvidia.

how i got nvidia to work in 2.7 with the latest drivers
step 1 install and boot into the 2.6.32.21 kernel
step 2 open synaptic and uninstall the 2.6.32.22 kernel i rebooted after this
step 3 run the update using synaptic or the update manager and install the newer 2.6.32.22 kernel and reboot to select
step 4 i use https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates to get the latest nvidia beta drivers but you could now also use synaptic to install the 195 versions
step 5 run from a terminal sudo nvidia-xconfig
step 6 reboot
step 7 for sli only as i have 2 nvidia 9500gt so now i run from a terminal sudo nvidia-xconfig --sli=on then my final reboot and all is well ..........

directions on how to add the ppa are on their website.

I followed your instructions exactly, removing 22 and reinstalling 22. I did not see that there was a newer version of 22.

I added the ppa, as before, and ran sudo apt-get update.

sudo nvidia-xconfig is not recognized.

It is not apparent that any nvidia drivers are installed.

I had the 256.25 drivers working on Ultimate Edition 2.6, but not on 2.7. I could not find Drama's post.

I finally got the Nvidia drivers to install for kernel 22, but Nvidia-Settings is not in the System/Preferences menu. It seems that when I click on System/Preferences/Monitors, I can get it to appear.

Well, no matter what I would do, the drivers would not install. I even tried reinstalling Ultimate Edition 2.7 and immediately installing the Nvidia drivers. I tried Purging all the Nvidia stuff, rebooting, and reinstalling the drivers, but they kept failing to install.

I would reboot, login, hit Ctrl/Alt/F1, login, and then run the following:

sudo service gdm stop
sudo sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-195.36.24-pkg2.run

Finally, I saw a thread that suggested the following code:

sudo sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-195.36.24.run -k $(uname -r)

The drivers installed without error and when I rebooted, the Nvidia logo appeared as I was booting up. Nvidia Settings does not appear in the System/Preferences menu so I thought the drivers were still not installed, but when I clicked on System/Preferences/Monitors, I get the following box?

It appears that your Graphics Driver does not support the necessary extensions to support this tool. Do you want to use your Graphics Driver's tool?

When I say Yes, the Nvidia Settings box comes up.

I edited the System'Preferences Menu and found that Nvidia X Server Settings was checked as well as Monitors, but the Nvidia entry was not showing when I selected System/Preferences with the mouse. When I unchecked Monitors, the Nvidia selection now shows in System/Preferences.

I'm not sure where the proper place to post for 2.6.1 is, but I figure this is as good as any.
NOTE: I was not able to install 2.8 due to my graphics card.

I have installed 2.6.1 with no problems except the highest resolution was 1024x768 or so. All I really want is 1280x1024. I tried activating the driver in hardware drivers, nothing changed except I could use the nvidia app to still be unable to increase resolution. I have tried using the PPA drivers, same deal. Only thing I can think of that I haven't tried is installing from the .run file supplied by nvidia, it wanted me to be out of X and not running the nouveu(sp?) driver, by the time I figured how to do that, alt+ctrl+f1 send me to a screen full of smiley faces and gibberish, no terminal.
I have an evga 240gt with 512mb of ddr5.

I hope someone can help, meanwhile I shall be reinstalling.

Thanks for responding.

I initially tried exactly that, but was met with a response that I could not install it without getting rid of the nouveu driver, which once I did that I could no longer alt+ctrl+f1. Other ways, including the PPA install, installed the driver fine, and I could even run compiz. The problem is I cannot find a way to increase my resolution. I tried manually entering it in nvidia's app, but that just limited me to part of the screen. I tried the

command, but I could not achieve anything (also I felt something was configured wrong because it told me my maximum resolution was 8010x8010, hence my attempt at manually installing the drivers.)
