I was curious..I've been messing with this for quite a few hours now and I cannot figure out for the life of me how to boot into the 2nd kernel that I have read so much about. Sometimes when I try to /etc/init.d/gdm stop, and the pc then freezes. The graphic card I have is a Nvidia 8800 gts for a notebook. So far nothing has helped..

Hi diablo69

Easiest way I was told was to hold down SHIFT while booting.

That gives your the grub boot list that ESC used to bring up.

Select the .21 kernel from the list by using the down arrow and then push enter.

Cheers

here is what I have tried..
Booting into the other kernel .21 and trying to install nvidia that way
installing the server kernel
blacklisting modules and trying to install nvidia

I found my answer here

http://ubuntu-ky.ubuntuforums.org/showt ... ?p=9233555

I booted into the .21 kernel recovery and it worked like a charm. Thank you for the help.

I installed 2.6 Flawlessly on my laptop with an Nvidia GPU so I assumed it would work just fine on my desktop, but it didnt and keeps failing. After reading all the posts I'll go home after work and try the alternate kernal fix. once thats done i'll have all my machines on the newest Ultimate Edition and THE PEASANTS WILL REJOICE! Thanks again for the awsome technicall support everyone. This is why I love linux :)

I too have tried all the methods here short of installing the server kernal to fix the display issue. :( It kinda works in the .21 kernal so maybe ill try and work it out in there instead.

Hey, I tried installing Ultimate Edition 2.6 64-bit onto my desktop, it was fast, but my GeForce 9400GT was not supported, I tried both of the restricted drivers and I tried installing the drivers from nVidia, no luck, I tried a clean Ubuntu 10.04 install and it worked fine.

My desktop stats are

AMD anthlon 240 x2 2.8ghz dual core
3GB of ram 800mhz (clocked at 667 because my mobo is stupid)
17" screen at 1280x1024
nVidia GeForce 9400GT PCI-e 1gb
320gb IDE hard drive

(in about 2 weeks I should be able to completely re-make my computer though)

Honestly because I didn't buy the PSU I have no clue what it is.

Honestly, I didn't expect a reply so fast. =) I wiped the drive on it and installed XP 64-bit and am now installing Ultimate Edition 2.6 side by side with it. Will edit with results!

Stupid language package download. xP Its at 120% now... I think I had to wait til about 185% or something...

Thanks a lot <3 I tried for several hours on my own to no avail, I don't completely understand where between 10.04LTS and Ultimate Edition 2.6 the compatibility was somehow lost

hi,

i been using Ultimate edition since 1.8, never had a problem. but with Ultimate Edition 2.6 x64 , i got a problem that i still couldnt fix after weeks of troubleshooting. my problem was supposed to be a simple nvidia proprietary driver issue, i resolved it from this thread by removing .22 kernel and nvidia driver worked with .21 kernel. now my system freezes for no reason for seconds (cursor hangs too). i did a little testing ... it is not a compiz issue ( i blocked compiz but same problem ) , not emerald issue but nvidia issue as i removed the nvidia driver and it all got fixed. i got Nvidia 6200 and i m using nvidia-current driver from hardware drivers. any suggestion cuz i m stuck. :(
